FYI Culture Fest @ Toronto Centre for the Arts, Toronto, ON - Sat Oct 1st!

URBAN MUSIC AND CULTURE TO BE SHOWCASED AT THE TORONTO CENTRE
FOR THE ARTS.

For Immediate Release

TORONTO – September 13, 2011 – As part of the 2011 pan-Canadian volunteer movement,
www.CultureDays.ca, FYI – Follow Your Instinct Arts Organization announces FYI Culture Fest inside the Toronto Centre For The Arts! FYI’s Culture Fest will help to raise awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians within urban creative arts and showcase the cultural life of their communities.

“It gives me great pleasure to use such a platform to showcase the impact urban music and culture has had on our community at large,” states Dwayne Dixon, founder of the not-for-profit FYI Arts Organization and current VP, of UMAC, The Urban Music Association of Canada.

FYI’s Culture Fest consists of 3 events which will launch on September 29th with a free Artist Appreciation Night (Part 1) inside Harlem Restaurant (67 Richmond Street East, Toronto), followed on October 01 by Above Par, a free round table discussion with some architects and prodigies of the urban music scene in Canada.

“Our panelists will provide a 360 degree view of urban music culture in Canada and how we've gone from having uber pride to low esteem right back to becoming the "new" hot spot for Urban Music period, not just in Canada” said Dixon. Lastly, closing out the Culture Fest is FYI Showcase (Part 3).

Since it’s launch 19 months ago, FYI Showcase has provided development and professional opportunities to several emerging and established artists, and has been instrumental in providing a consistent outlet for urban artists in this country. Music industry veteran, Aisha Wickham-Thomas will provide the Keynote Speech at The Showcase event on Saturday evening,

This three-part event will also see the official introduction of FYI Kids. FYI Kids provides enrichment programming aimed to reinforce and further develop confidence, self-esteem and stage presence in school-aged children through music, sport & culture. Included in their “culture” component, braille classes are offered to bring vision-health awareness to the fore. “Over the past 2 years we’ve had over
1000 children come thru our program and you’d be surprised just how far a little TLC can go” - Kirt Milligin, FYI Kids Program Director.

FYI Culture Fest will showcase the best local talent and community organizations across all 3 events and culminate with a 2 hour, interactive show that invites the public/audience to participate in Canadian urban culture and discover the world of urban artists, facilitators, and authors at work in their community.

“FYI Culture Fest” will give participants a taste of what it takes to become a professional performing/recording artist in the Urban Music Industry and highlight the powerful impact on it’s community.

Commenting on the free Artist Appreciation Night at Harlem, VP of Artist Relations at FYI Arts Organization, Candice Dixon says “since the very beginning, Harlem Restaurant has shown us tremendous support in our efforts to showcase urban music culture in a bright light, now it’s our turn to return the favour to our artists”

----------

"Toronto! Stand Up. It is time, once again, to shine a bright light on and make some big noise for Toronto and its remarkable young artists and organizers who undoubtedly make it one of North America's cultural capitals.

Manifesto season is upon us and we are thrilled to share with the people the most impressive and inclusive series of events we have ever been able to. It's been 5 years since the first ever meeting of minds town hall that birthed Manifesto, and to see all those ideas harnessed into a collective vision and come to life in year 5 is truly humbling. Proud is an understatement for how I feel about the entire team who has put this festival together over the years and the countless community members who have been a part of, and inspired, it. With 13 events over 11 days, we have carefully crafted a festival that we feel has something for everyone and that can open people up to new ways of thinking and connecting to themselves, their community and the universe.

There are all sorts of festival highlights, but keep in mind some underlying themes that are running throughout our programming: People Power, Public, and Generations; you will see these echoed through everything we have announced and some surprises throughout the 11 days. As one of our special guests 9th Wonder noted last time he was at Manifesto 'Toronto is the hip-hop capital of the world.' For those of us who live here, we know this...Toronto breathes a unique creative energy. We ask everyone who participates with the festival this year to inhale and exhale deeply; give thanks for what we have and connect to the vibration being released; it's connected to a global pulse and rhythm that is connected to and fuelled by generations past. We are all part of this. And please remember what one of our special guests for Manifesto 2011 Rakim teaches us...'don't sweat the technique'. 1Love."

- Che Kothari, Executive Director

SYNOPSIS:

GHETT’A LIFE is an “against the odds” action drama set in a politically turbulent inner city community of Kingston. Derrick, a determined inner city teenager realizes his dream of becoming a champion boxer despite a country, community and family conflicted by a divisive political system.

Derrick dreams of being Jamaica’s next world light weight boxing champion. He knew from an early age that he had the ability to outbox even the bigger boys on his lane but it’s election year and the politics divide the country and Derrick’s community. His father, a loyal party supporter, forbids Derrick from going to the boxing gym. To do so he has to cross party lines.

Derrick defiantly follows his heart and is confronted with the serious repercussions of his decision. The don of Derrick’s community, Sin, is set on keeping him from crossing over to the “other side” even if it means destroying Derrick’s dream. Derrick’s father is so blinded by political tribalism that he sees Derrick’s actions as betrayal. On “the other side”, at the gym, is a coach who becomes Derrick’s mentor and someone who shows him that Jamaica is bigger than just one community and that Derrick’s dreams are worth fighting for.

Derrick’s journey of discovery takes the audience through his coming of age and the realization that anything that divides can’t be good for anyone. The ignorance of divisiveness gives way to the triumph that comes with unity.

GHETT’A LIFE is a wholly Jamaican film with all investors, cast and crew being committed to an authentic depiction of what life is and what life can be in the inner city of Kingston. This film with its positive message of overcoming adversity and ignorance will inspire audiences at home and abroad.

The movie is screening at the Harbourfront Centre, 6pm, Tuesday, Sept 13th.
