Melanie Fiona & Jully Black Illuminate Toronto at Luminato Festival
Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square was the place to be to witness two of the city's precious R&B gems, Jully Black and Melanie Fiona, grace the stage for an incredible high-energy opening of the Luminato Festival of Arts and Creativity.
Black, 32, and Fiona, 26, performed in their hometown in front of a crowd of hundreds of fans who packed the city's busiest intersection for the free concert.
Black, won a Juno Award in 2008 for her third album Revival which was certified Gold in Canada selling over 50,000 copies. She performed several tracks from that album including "Queen" and "Seven Day Fool" which peaked at #9 on the Canadian Hot 100 Chart. Her fourth album, The Black Book, was released last year and has spawned the singles "Need You" and "Running."
Melanie Fiona's debut album, The Bridge, was released last summer and earned her a 2010 Best Female R&B Vocal Performance Grammy Award Nomination for the huge single "It Kills Me." The ballad spent nine weeks in the #1 position on Billboard's Hot R&B charts in the US.
The Luminato Festival, now in its fourth year, ran from June 11th to the 20th and featured numerous activities including dance, film, literature, visual arts, theatre and music on stages, streets and public spaces with many of the events being offered free of charge.
