Lights! Camera! Action! is definitely what you'll experience as you're on the edge of your seat watching, MEMPHIS the Musical, while trying very hard not to jump up and dance! As one of the most colourful, energetic and thought-provoking productions to ever hit Canadian stages, it's very clear why this show was awarded four Tony Awards in 2010, including Best Musical and Best Original Music courtesy of David Bryan, founding member of the rock group, Bon Jovi.
MEMPHIS is a theatrical masterpiece that takes you on journey into the 1950's when a young, White, struggling DJ named Huey Calhoun (Bryan Fenkart) sets his sights on getting a new flavour of music, Soul music, played and exposed outside of his hometown, Memphis, Tennessee. Calhoun tries desperately to show his mother that he can make something of himself. And, while his love for that so-called forbidden music genre grows, he also faces challenges in his pursuit to fall in love and court a Black singer, Felicia, (Felicia Boswell) who he believes has the potential to be a superstar. But, his mother, her brother, and many others are not at all in favour of this relationship and practically everyone is opposed to him introducing this new sound to the masses.
The storyline is inspired by actual events in the life of Memphis DJ, Dewey Phillips, who is credited with being one of the first White DJs to play Black music on air in the United States. The show explodes with phenomenal dance routines, choreographed by Canadian, Sergio Trujillo, who was responsible for Jersey Boys' outstanding dance sequences. Directed by Christopher Ashley, Tony Award Nominee for Xanadu, the incredible set changes are eye-catching and draws you in to the show making you feel like you are part of it. And, the overall blend of captivating voices in the cast makes you feel as if you are at a concert.
