Film Screening - THE ADVENTURES OF MWANSA THE GREAT @ TIFF Bell Lightbox, Toronto, ON - Fri Feb 17th (FREE) & Sun Feb 19th!


You are invited to a free public event…Ways of Seeing (in) African Cinema
Friday, February 17 from 10:00am to 12:00pm

You are invited to join a panel of esteemed scholars and film programmers for a screening of THE ADVENTURES OF MWANSA THE GREAT, a short from the African Phantasms programme, and a discussion about contemporary film production in Africa.

In the short by director Rungano Nyoni, a young boy uses his imagination to transform his everyday reality into an exciting quest, as he journeys from his village to the copper mines to recover the magical mud necessary to repair his sister's beloved doll. Panelists will consider the film, as well as its relation to current trends in contemporary film production, film programming, and popular visual culture in Africa.

Panelists include: Professor Kass Banning (University of Toronto), Professor Marieme Lo (University of Toronto), and Julie MacArthur (programmer of African Phantasms: New African Short Films). The panel will be moderated by Co-Director of TIFF, Cameron Bailey.

The event is open to the public – tickets will be available for free on the morning of the event at the TIFF Bell Lightbox Box Office (located at 350 King St. W.)

This Higher Learning panel is part of the larger celebration of Black History Month, Music, Magic, Clash: New Voices in the African Diaspora at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
