Sony Centre For The Performing Arts
Proudly Presents
NATIONAL CHINESE ACROBATS
with the KITCHENER-WATERLOO SYMPHONY
OPENS THIS SATURDAY FOR TWO SHOWS ONLY!
On Saturday, May 12, Toronto will experience history in the making as
China’s world-renowned Hunan Acrobatic Troupe join the critically
acclaimed Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony in a groundbreaking world premiere
performance. With over 30 Chinese performers and a full symphony
orchestra, NATIONAL CHINESE ACROBATS will present an unforgettable
performance that will both mesmerize and mystify with the best in
Chinese arts, illusion, acrobatics, music, dance, and drama, in a
thrilling display of artistry and collaboration.
In support of the Sony Centre’s diversity mandate, NATIONAL CHINESE
ACROBATS is an exciting Canada-China cultural exchange between the
Hunan Acrobatic Troupe, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and the Sony
Centre For The Performing Arts. For the first time since its doors
opened, the Sony Centre facilitated this new creative collaboration, the
first of its kind between a Chinese Acrobatic Troupe and a Western
Symphony.
Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Assistant Conductor Evan Mitchell has put
together a musical programme that includes Verdi, Mozart and Mendelssohn
with which the Hunan Acrobatic Troupe will perform dazzling feats,
daredevil maneuvers, and breathtaking balancing acts. The entire range
of Chinese circus acts will be on display including martial arts,
contortion, silks, and the perennial favourite, plate spinning.
SONY CENTRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, Toronto’s first performing arts
centre, has played a defining role in the cultural life of Toronto for
more than 50 years. Today, the newly renovated Sony Centre is home to a
roster of national and international artists that reflect the diversity
and sophistication of 21st century Toronto. In addition, the Sony Centre
is dedicated to developing Toronto’s younger audiences through family
programming, workshops targeted towards school-aged audiences, an
under-30 membership program, and other community initiatives including
an international culinary experience. www.sonycentre.ca
