An Evening of Caribbean Jazz and Folk with Etienne Charles, Eddie Bullen Trio & La Petite Musicale @ Daniels Spectrum, Toronto, ON - Sun Aug 4th!

As part of his 2013 World Tour Trinidad-born trumpeter Etienne Charles headlines the evening, performing tracks from his new album, Creole Soul being released through Red Distribution/Sony Music Canada on July 23. Creole Soul highlights a myriad of inspirations from Haitian creole chants and blues to bebop and R&B while drawing on an array of rhythms including Rocksteady, Reggae, Belle Air, Kongo and Calypso. An alumnus of the prestigious Juilliard School and Florida State University, Etienne has received critical acclaim for his exciting performances, thrilling compositions and knack for connecting with audiences worldwide. Etienne has been hailed by The New York Times as “an auteur” (Ben Ratliff), by Jazz Times as “A daring improviser who delivers with heart wrenching lyricism” (Bill Milkowski) and according to Downbeat Magazine “Charles delivers his ebullient improvisations with the elegance of a world-class ballet dancer.” (John Murph). In June 2012, Etienne was awarded with a US Congressional Record for his musical contributions to the citizens of Trinidad & Tobago and the World. Etienne cooks up an ambrosial bouillabaisse of New World music genres, with Jazz and Calypso standing out as piquant flavours.

For most West Indians, the name La Petite Musicale is synonymous with the immortal Olive Walke and the legendary folk-choir that she founded in Port of Spain more than a half century ago. La Petite Musicale of Toronto was established by a core group of members from the parent company in Trinidad and Tobago. The group?s repertoire includes traditional Spanish and French folk songs, gospel, classical renditions, calypso and parang personifying the spirit and richness of the diverse cultures of their wonderful country Trinidad and Tobago and also the Caribbean.

Opening the performance at 7:30 pm in the 400 seat Ada Slaight Hall will be the Eddie Bullen Trio. From his first album, ‘Nocturnal Affair’ to his most recent ‘Havana Nights’, Eddie Bullen gives his audience a taste of contemporary jazz, flavoured with Caribbean and Latin rhythms. “Eddie Bullen keeps audiences in Canada and throughout the Caribbean on their feet and begging for more with his distinctive style. His compositions are audacious and sexy, titillating the senses…. “ New York Daily News.

Each year the Muhtadi International Drumming Festival, the largest percussion-based event of its kind in Canada, presents over 40 live performances, free of charge. The 15th Annual festival will be held June 7th and 8th, 2014 in Woodbine Park, Toronto, Ontario Canada.

The organization concluded a successful program this past February; Muhtadi International Drumming Festival Presents Drum Beats which featured artists who executed performances, performance-demonstrations and workshops featuring drumming in GTA community centres, libraries, and schools. Drum Beats was held to celebrate Black History Month 2013. The program was sponsored by the TD Bank Group and presented in partnership with Mariposa In The Schools.

The proceeds of the Daniels Spectrum performance will go directly towards the costs of producing 2014 free festival.

The doors open at 6 p.m. with light entertainment and beverages in the South Lobby of Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park.
