Opening Weekend of Panamania @ Various Locations, Toronto, ON - Fri Jul 10th - Mon Jul 13th!


PANAMANIA presented by CIBC, begins its 35-day run as the arts and culture festival enhancing the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games experience. Unprecedented in scale, PANAMANIA features more than 1,300 artists in 250 performances and exhibitions across Toronto starting today and running until August 15. The festival showcases the diverse cultures and artistic excellence of the Americas through music, theatre, dance and more, with free and ticketed events.
PANAMANIA will span Toronto with four major programs:

PANAMANIA Presentations (July 10–August 15, free and ticketed): Featuring 40 national and international performances and exhibitions, including 28 original new works commissioned by the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee that have their world premieres during PANAMANIA and feature such distinguished award-winning artists as Robert Lepage, Sandra Shamas, Edward Burtynsky, Veronica Tennant, Mustafa the Poet, Rick Miller, Crystal Pite and more.

PANAMANIA Live @ Nathan Phillips Square (July 10–26 and August 7–12, free): Bright and energetic design elements envelop the Square, which features daily live music and entertainment programming that culminates with nightly concerts on the main stage and fireworks, co-produced with the City of Toronto. Victory Celebrations, presented by CIBC, honour medal-winning athletes nightly at 7 p.m. Major music headliners scheduled to perform free outdoor concerts during PANAMANIA include Grammy Award-winning, Latin Grammy Award-winning and Juno Award-winning artists, such as The Flaming Lips, Calle 13, Wyclef Jean, Serena Ryder, The Roots, A Tribe Called Red, Janelle Monae, Café Tacvba, Stars, Brigitte Boisjoli, Chromeo, Jann Arden, ChocQuibTown, Death from Above 1979, Lila Downs, Lights, Luciano, Dragonette, Colin James, USS, Marie-Pierre Arthur, Tanya Tagaq, The Barra MacNeils, Marianas Trench, Whitehorse, Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires, Kiesza, Austra, Radio Radio and more.

CIBC Pan Am Park (July 11–25, free): Experience the ultimate street party in the heart of the largest sport competition cluster on the grounds of Exhibition Place. Daily programming includes live music, interactive sponsor activations, food and fun for the whole family.

PANAMANIA Live @ The Distillery District (July 11–25, free): Take in the sights, sounds and tastes of the Americas while strolling the cobblestone lanes. The Distillery District, located next to the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletes’ Village, will be a hub of activity during the Pan Am Games.

World premiere of THE WATERSHED by Annabel Soutar and directed by Chris Abraham, follows an artist and a country struggling to chart a sustainable course between economic growth and
environmental stewardship. Co-produced by Crow's Theatre and Porte Parole.

VISUAL ART
World premiere unveiling, CHALLENGE AND TRIUMPH BY DAVID M. GENERAL - At the 1907 Boston Marathon, Canadian long distance runner Tom Longboat smashed the previous world record by a whopping five minutes. An inspiration to Aboriginal and Canadian people, sculptor David M. General has created a tribute to Longboat to his legacy as a Canadian sport icon.
10am – Challenge and Triumph by David M. General at Ontario’s Celebration Zone (WP). Runs until

THE POWER PLANT presents Toronto artists Nadia Belerique, Lili Huston-Herterich, and Laurie
Kang and collectives Bik Van der Pol, Tecerunquito, and YES! Association/ Föreningen JA!
Juxtaposing. The artists work together for the first time to investigate intrinsic playfulness and
performativity of objects and photographs in their individual artistic practices, ultimately offering
temporality as an instinctual means of organizing individuals non-hierarchially. The exhibit runs from
June 19th to September 7th, at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery.

WATER’S EDGE, Six internationally renowned fine art photographers, each originating from a Pan
Am country, come together for this world premiere, curated by No. 9, a Toronto arts organization that
raises awareness for environmental concerns. The exhibition will be held at Union Station Great Hall
and Pearson International Airport from July 10 - August 15, and it explores the integral yet tenuous
relationship we have with our natural water supplies.

YOUNG WORLD FACES OF PAN AM from July 10 - August 15 Commerce Court at 199 Bay Street will hold large-scale portrait photographs featuring 41 Torontonian women who have family
backgrounds reflecting the diversity of the 41 participating nations and territories.

SMARTER. FASTER. TOUGHER. AN EXHIBITION ON SPORTS, FASHION + TECH, The diverse
world of sports permeates every aspect of our lives from health, fashion and culture to technology,
design and architecture. This exhibition showcases the evolution of sportswear technology.

DANCE SHOWROOM is a colourful, arresting dance creation filled with passion and irony. In this showcase of contemporary Cuban dance, performers burst on stage in a powerful metaphor for life that blurs the boundaries of staged and real emotions. DanzAbierta is one of Havana's most prominent dance companies, regularly touring as cultural ambassadors throughout the world.

THE POSTMAN follows Canada’s first African-Canadian postman, Albert Jackson, on his original
route in the Annex. This site-specific presentation tells the story of Mr. Jackson’s journey to overcome
racial protest and rise to his ultimate position at Canada Post.

LA IMAGINACIÓN DEL FUTURO, What if Salvador Allende had a team of modern communication experts at his disposal when Augusto Pinochet launched his coup? Upon learning of the staggering statistics of people who will be displaced because of the rising sea
levels caused by climate change, theatre artist Ravi Jain found himself asking: “what can I do?”
Inspired by the ancient text of the great Indian epic: the Mahabharata, GIMME SHELTER questions
our responsibility to action when facing problems that seem too big to solve.

REQUIEM OF WATER by Meaghan Ogilvie is an act of remembrance to the spirit of water that has
been forgotten. Ogilvie was inspired by the Anishinaabe culture and their women’s responsibility to
the maintenance and respect of water. She contends that the goal of the REQUIEM OF WATER
exhibit is to heighten public awareness and encourage thoughtful responsibility towards our precious
water resources and the role we play in caring for them.
