Documentary Film Screening: Queen Nanny Legendary Maroon Chieftainess @ U of T, Innis Town Hall, Toronto, ON - Sun Sept 13th!

On SUN SEPT 13th, 2015 Jamaica National will host a special test screening of ‘QUEEN NANNY: LEGENDARY MAROON CHIEFTAINESS, a documentary about the legendary leader of the Maroons of Jamaica. The event is open to the public and free of charge, with donations accepted at the door. Best known for his documentary AKWANTU: THE JOURNEY about the Maroons of Jamaica, filmmaker Roy T. Anderson invites you to a test screening of his new film ‘Queen Nanny’.

The film highlights the intriguing story of Nanny, a queen captured in her homeland and forcefully transported across the Atlantic Ocean in the belly of a slave ship. Once in her new home, she eventually rose to become the leader and warrior chieftaniness of a new nation. She led a band of former enslaved Africans during the early to mid-18th century up into the rugged mountains of Jamaica to strategically plan and overtake the powerful British army.

Sadly, not many people outside of Jamaica know of the Legendary “Nanny” warrior chieftainess of the Jamaican Maroons. The Maroons have maintained a continuous presence in Jamaica for more than three hundred years; living on the same treaty lands gained as a result of their epic 80-year plus battle with the vaunted British military. Their proud African-based language, culture and governance are still very much alive today.

One of the goals in making this film is to eventually have copies available in classrooms, universities, libraries, and cultural organizations in Africa and throughout the diaspora. In our own small way, we're hoping that this film can be used as a catalyst to help safeguard and highlight one of the world's most fascinating cultures that is being threatened with extinction.

The film will have its official World Premiere on Mon October 19, 2015 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. This World Premiere screening and Discussion is part of the UN Remember Slavery Programme of Activities for 2015; which includes a solemn commemorative meeting of the UN General Assembly, film screenings, round table discussions, and an exhibit, among other events. This will be a special red-carpet event sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Jamaica and the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, in partnership with the UN Department of Public Information, and Action 4 Reel Flimworks.
