Californian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Tori Kelly made her breakthrough in August 2015 at the at the MTV Video Music Awards, singing "Should’ve Been Us," from her debut album Unbreakable Smile. Her performance, which the Guardian called "a barnstorming display of Whitney Houstonesque vocal virtuosity," inspired fans in droves to look her up: Nobody that night was more sought out on the music-identification app Shazam than she was.
