Friday, April 22nd - Caliban Arts Theatre Honors Luther Vandross!
With Vocalist Carlos Morgan & Band!

Carlos Morgan, a talented singer/songwriter/ producer based in Toronto, is poised to break on a global level. "Feelin' Alright", his debut album, is a collection of soothing love ballads and R&B club jams with a pinch of hip hop flavor. The album showcases the diversity of Morgan's singing style, from sultry and seductive ballads to more upbeat R&B, hip hop grooves.

Rhythm and Blues singer and songwriter, Luther Vandross came on the music scene in 1975, singing back-up for David Bowie, and co-writing his hit single, "Fame." Going on to sing back-up for several other popular singers, Vandross released his own album, "Never Too Much," in 1981, and it immediately went to the top of the R&B charts. Each of his next five albums sold more than a million copies, and Vandross won his first Grammy Award in 1990, for best R&B male vocal performance. He went on to record many more hit albums, and won several more Grammys.

Saturday, April 24th - Caliban Arts Theatre Honors Nina Simone! With Ania Soul & Band!

Ania Soul is a heartfelt singer/songwriter/performer and a fearless newcomer to the industry as a solo indie artist; as well she is taking on shows performing with her band the St.Royals showcasing originals and well known cover tunes done in Ania's way! She is a tried and true performer, ready to bring her brand of soul to the world and keeping all inspired as she writes and performs timeless songs.

Nina Simone was a classically trained pianist who became a famous nightclub singer, thanks to an early hit from 1958, "I Loves You Porgy." She famously interpreted and composed classical, jazz, pop, gospel, folk and blues songs of love and bitterness and had a worldwide following over a fifty-year career that earned her the nickname of "High Priestess of Soul." A poor black girl from the American south, she was enough of a musical prodigy that community patrons financially supported her musical education. She went to the Julliard School of Music in New York and earned a living as a pianist, accompanying singers and playing in nightclubs. She began singing in 1954, and audiences loved her deep voice, raw emotions and soulful interpretations of standards. Simone was a self-described diva of the temperamental genius variety, and she so detested racial injustice in the United States she lived abroad after 1974(in Barbados, Africa, Switzerland and, finally, France).

A surge of popularity during the 1990s created a new generation of fans. Her records made the jazz charts again and she was heard in TV commercials, movies and hip-hop samples. Some of her more well-known songs are: "My Baby Just Cares For Me," "I Put A Spell On You," "To Be Young, Gifted and Black," "See Line Woman," "Sinnerman" and "Mississippi Goddam."
