sitting in with WORST POP BAND EVER
@ Mây Cafe (main floor), 876 Dundas St. W www.MayToronto.com
:: Modern jazz, $10
With influences ranging from Wayne Shorter to Deerhoof to J Dilla, The Worst Pop Band Ever combines improvisational jazz and indie pop. Featuring some of Toronto’s most acclaimed jazz artists, including two Juno award winners, W.P.B.E. blends acoustic bass with turntables & analog synths with saxophone, twisting both originals and covers, straddling genres and confounding expectations. Often compared to Medeski Martin Wood or the Bad Plus, the W.P.B.E. like to think of themselves as the ugly love child of Radiohead and Miles Davis.
feat. Tim Shia (drums), Adrean Farrugia (piano), Chris Gale (saxophone), Drew Birston (bass), LEO37 (turntables)

Herbert Jeffrey “Herbie” Hancock has long been considered one of the greatest visionaries in the history of jazz as both pianist and composer. As part of Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet, Hancock helped to redefine the role of the rhythm section in modern jazz art, was one of the primary architects of the “post-bop” sound, and was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace music synthesizers and funk music. Toronto’s fast rising 25 year old piano sensation Nick Maclean will pay Tribute to this master artist during this year’s Toronto jazz festival. His quartet will explore Hancock material over 2 sets: the first set featuring music from Hancock’s tenure with Miles and his time on Blue Note Records, while the second set delves into Herbie’s funkified sounds from his group Head Hunters.
feat. Nick Maclean (piano), Brownman Ali (trumpet), Julian Anderson-Bowes (basses), Geoff Bruce (drums)
