Caribana 2010 Officially Launches in Toronto!

The 2010 Scotiabank Caribana season officially kicked off last Thursday, July 15 with a celebration at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square.

Hosted by CP24's NNeka Elliott, the launch featured a short "parade of bands" which showcased the vibrant costumes worn by parade revellers as well as performances from local artists.

An announcement was made earlier this week that the festival is $100,000 short on funding after not qualifying for money from the Ministry of Tourism.

The two-week long festival now in it's 43rd year is gearing up for the big parade on Lakeshore which takes place on July 31st.

Other events leading up to the parade include the From the Soul Art Exhibit which launches on July 22nd; the Caribana Gala, at the Liberty Grand on July 23rd; and the King and Queens Competition at Lamport Stadium on July 29th and Pan Alive celebrating the steel pan on July 30th.

2010 Essence Music Festival Celebrity Pix & Videos!

The 16th Annual Essence Music Festival held in New Orleans on this past July 4th long weekend turned out to be a very successful event and probably one of the best attended since its inception. Hotels were sold out, the concerts held at the Superdome were packed and thousands of people poured through the Morial Convention Centre to attend free empowerment and relationship seminars and to shop at the wide range of vendor booths.

The three night concert line-up included a top-notch list of performers including, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson, whose rare concert appearances may have certainly encouraged many people to attend this year's festival.

Still rebuilding from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans was thriving with celebrities. Many were there to perform, while others pushed their products and/or books. Bell Biv DeVoe, Ginuwine, and MC Lyte were just a few of the many artists who treated convention centre attendees to free concerts. One of the busiest celebrities was Mary J. Blige, who not only performed in concert at the Superdome, but was also seen making her rounds through the convention centre where she had booths to promote her new fragrance, My Life, and her new line of Sunglasses, Melodies, due to launch this fall.

The Walmart and Ford booths were popular interview spots where celebrities such as Janet Jackson, Sherri Shepherd, Co-Host of the View, Actor Boris Kodjoe, Singers Raphael Saadiq, Monica, Trey Songz, and Melanie Fiona all spent time talking about their projects.

This year marks the 40th celebration of the Essence Magazine which caters to empowering Black Women.

Gyptian and Rupee Shine at Sunset

Despite being set back a couple of weeks, Toronto DJ Dwayne "D'Bandit" Pitt could not have asked for a better day for his inaugural "Sunset" party, a new concept overlooking Toronto's waterfront at the Solarium/Sound Academy venue.

The late afternoon party from 5p - 11p, something that Toronto is not really accustomed to, was a celebration of Pitt's 15 year anniversary in the business and his birthday. A lavish spread of hors d'oeuvres courtesy of Tasty Restaurant and performances by Soca Superstar, Rupee, and Reggae Artist, Gyptian made this event extra special.

Gyptian, (born Windel Beneto Edwards) who had suffered injuries in a motorcycle collision in his native, Jamaica just 12 days earlier before the June 19th event, addressed to the predominantly female fans, that he had patches and bruises but said, "for my ladies, I'm so tough." He belted out his hit track "Beautiful Lady" on cue, and later went into other tracks, "Mama Don't Cry," "Serious Times" and a few others before captivating the audience with a fifteen minute rendition of his mega hit "Hold Yuh," which is the title of his upcoming album to be released on July 20th.

Rupert Clarke, better known as Rupee, brought his party vibes as he had the crowd singing and dancing to every song.

The Barbados-born artist has had much success with hits like "Jump," "Tempted to Touch," and "What Happens in de Party." The success of this event will undoubtedly be talked about for months to come, and until then, we'll just have to look forward to the next Sunset.
