GoodTimes For a Cause @ Six Degrees Venue, Toronto, ON - Fri May 4th!

Greetings GoodTimes Family,

Over the past 8 years we've managed to become one of the staple events in Toronto nightlife. We started in a small basement of the now defunct “Milanos”, to various premiere nightclubs across the great city of Toronto. We've had some absolutely memorable moments, brought down some legendary artists to perform, and basically had some of the most memorable nights of our lives. Its crazy to think that some of you who were there when it started 8 years ago, are still with us, and are who we now affectionately call “family”; which leads me to the next point.

What does the word “family” mean ? Does it only pertain to those who share your blood, your nationality, or close friends ? How far does, or should, that word extend ? I personally believe in only one family, and one blood. We are all one HUMAN family, or at least we strive to be. The words “family”, “love” and “compassion” are interchangeable for some of us, and those beliefs extend far and wide, maybe even more so to those who may be at a point in their life where they need it most.

This is where you/we come in. On Friday, May. 4Th 2012, we would like to challenge ourselves; to see exactly how far and wide that definition of “family” can go.

“GoodTimes” has partnered up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Canada  (Toronto & Central Chapter) for the first of an annual event called “GoodTimes For A Cause”. We have decided to try to give back to our community by raising funds for this amazing organization, an organization which grants the hopeful wishes of children who are experiencing tough times fighting a host of illnesses and disabilities. These wishes range from wanting to meet a certain celebrity, to wanting to have a certain experience in their life; in order to give them just a little more hope.

To put it bluntly; we should ALL be there. Many of us know the test of strength, which is a part of seeing someone you love suffer through Cancer, MS, Leukemia, AIDS/HIV or any other illness you would like to substitute. Most of us know what its like, or have had to sit powerless and watch as our loved ones suffered through their last moments, only to lose the battle. Many of us know how important “hope” is, and if you don't ... ask a Cancer survivor.

On May 4th, we are asking you to come out and help support those in our “family” who need a little more light in their dark times. In order to help Make-A-Wish and their amazing cause, we have decided to donate a portion of the door proceeds from this “GoodTimes For A Cause” event to their foundation. In addition to that we are donating all private donations to Make-A-Wish, and I would like to thank all of the businesses and individuals who have donated items thus far, and who will be volunteering their time at our event.

In addition to the amazing classic joints from the 80's & 90's we will all be enjoying, we will be giving away a ton of giveaways and prizes for the following :

Best Dressed ( Male )
Best Dressed ( Female )
Best Dancer ( Male )
Best Dancer ( Female )
Biggest Donation

Prizes include :

- Autographed Basketball by entire Toronto Raptors Basketball Team ( courtesy of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment )
- $230 Gift Certificate for Cut & Highlights from Priya R. ( courtesy of Evoke Salon )
- Cut, Wash, Style, Conditioning Package ( from Concepts Day Spa Salon – Yorkville District )

- Gold Pyramid Bracelet by Accessories Boutique ( courtesy of ShowKase )

We hope to see you all on Friday, May 4th 2012 @ the beautiful 6 Degrees Nightclub ( 2335 Yonge & Eglinton ).

Come out and dance the night away to the Classic Hip Hop & R&B, Classic Reggae, Retro, Classic House, Classic Soca & Miami Bass.

Music will be provided by DJ Sedeuce & Flash Gordon of Megahertz, ShowKase

Hosted by Damon B & Love Jones.

Come out and help us make a difference, in the lives of those that need our support. Help us Make-A-Wish.

Sincerely,

The GoodTimes Family

Film Screening: MARLEY @ Isabel Bader Theatre, Thurs May 3rd & Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, Sat May 5th!

Oscar winner Kevin MacDonald (Last King of Scotland, One Day in September) delivers the long awaited, authorized biography of reggae legend Bob Marley. MacDonald offers an expansive yet intimate history of the larger than life artist. The icon is remembered on a most personal level through affectionate first-hand accounts from his family and inner circle. He was a father, a lover, a rabid football fan and a revolutionary, but most importantly, he was a passionate and dedicated musician. MacDonald fully immerses us in the singer’s history through beautiful scenes shot on location in Nine Mile and Trenchtown, rare archival interviews and enough concert footage to satisfy even the most devoted fans. Marley is a film that understands why Bob Marley’s influence still resonates with such strength today. Lynne Crocker

Film Screening: CBFF & Hotdocs Presents “Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story” @ TIFF Bell Lightbox 2, Tues May 1st & The ROM Theatre, Wed May 2nd!

In 1966, filmmaker Frank De Felitta made a documentary for NBC News about life in the Mississippi Delta. When it aired on television, many white Southerners were outraged at the portrayal of the South as racist, a fact that many preferred to deny. One scene in particular eventually destroyed the life of Booker Wright, an African-American man working in a ‘whites only’ restaurant. His powerful performance explaining his position serving the white community resulted in a beating so brutal he was hospitalized. Forty-six years after his televised appearance, Booker’s granddaughter, Yvette Johnson, and Frank’s son, director Raymond De Felitta, meet in Greenwood to discover what led Booker to commit his courageous act of “accidental activism.” They also explore the man’s untimely murder and uncover the role the filmmaker’s father, Frank De Felitta, played in determining his fate.

Hot Docs Film Premiere: Charles Bradley: Soul of America @ Various Theatres, Toronto, ON - Mon Apr 30th - Sat May 5th!

Fusicology Films and Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival are pleased to present the International Premiere of...

Charles Bradley: Soul of America

74 minutes

Director: Poull Brien

Hot off the heels of a stellar World Premiere at SXSW 2012, this very moving, highly buzzed about film is poised to become one of the faves of this year's Hot Docs Festival.

For decades he’s been Black Velvet, an impersonator channeling James Brown with uncanny similitude, scraping by in Brooklyn’s projects with small club gigs in the evenings and odd jobs by day. But 62-year-old Charles Bradley has an impossible dream: he wants to make it in the music industry as…himself. As if that weren’t challenge enough, he’s also supporting the mother who abandoned him as a child, struggling to pay his own bills, and, in his spare time, learning to read.

When Bradley’s noticed by the soul maestros at Daptone Records, it seems as though he just might have a chance. With lyrics that draw directly from the anguish and hardship of his life, his electrifying performances transform pain and sorrow into an experience of sublime transcendence. When he says to the audience, “I love you, each and every one of you,” he truly means it. It’s a visceral rush to your soul.

**Screenings will be preceded by the short documentary "I Beat Mike Tyson" and followed by Q&A with the director Poull Brien
