More than just entertainment

Saturday March 3 @ 3:30pm

BEWARE OF CHRISTIANS

Alex, Matt, Micheal and Will have grown up as Bible believing Christians who did all the right things. As they have grown older, they have realized that the Jesus does not look like the healthy, wealthy, American Jesus they have been trained to know and love. They soon realize that their biases and allegiances to worldly things have determined their views on Christianity. So, they decide to leave their homes in the US for a while and reexamine what Jesus says about certain issues that face young people.

Saturday March 3 @ 7pm

BLESSED & CURSED

Starring: Deitrick Haddon, Kiki Sheard, Bobby Jones, Drew Sidora, Sheryl Lee Ralph

A modern twist on the biblical Story of David and Saul, Blessed & Cursed depicts Dwight Hawkins (Detrick Haddon) struggle to realize his God given purpose. Compelled to help his father after his dreams are derailed, Dwight must choose between family obligations versus pursuing his own dreams of gospel music superstardom. Dwight is caught in a scheme of jealousy.

Sunday March 4 @ 3:30 pm

THE ENCOUNTER

Stranded in the middle of nowhere, five strangers find themselves in a deserted roadside diner because of a road closure. They all come face to face with a diner owner who serves them more than just food. This host knows all of their secrets, knows exactly what they would like to order and possesses the answers to all of their problems – if only they would trust him. The Encounter is a unique tale about the opportunity we are all afforded . . . to accept salvation through Jesus. It is a miraculous Encounter that will change their lives forever.

Sunday March 4 @ 7 pm

SOULMATE

For those still waiting to exhale, Soulmate is a gripping cinematic journey into the realities facing today’s successful, saved, and single African American women. This deep and personal portrait reveals the trials, and triumphs of unforgettable women while offering hope and practical advice on such issues as loneliness, the desire for sexual intimacy, men on the “down low”, the ticking biological clock and the uncertainty of the future. This film offers uplifting revelations about the quest for finding your true Soul- mate.

ABOUT THE PLAY

The phenomenon known as "The Diary of Black Men" is an exciting and tantalizing theatrical production that has played to sold-out audiences in the U. S., United Kingdom and Canada `for nearly a quarter century. Written by Houstonian Thomas Meloncon, this choreopoem has stood the test of time and is the longest touring and most successful stage play in Black theatre history.

"They were spellbound in New York. Emotions ran high in Chicago, the audience begged for more in Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. The acting is raw and powerful! There will be tears, laughter, anger, and joy".

The plays subtitle "How do you love a Black woman?" provokes thoughts of a historical nature and magnitude. Originally penned in the late 70's, this newly updated version addresses the issues of love, trust and black family values that have long been discussed cross-culturally, by economists, politicians, theologians, social scientists and the like, thus making the black man, in the words of Mr. Meloncon, "...the most talked about animal in America." This observation could very well be the catalyst that has consistently packed venues in every corner of this country and abroad. The play attempts to address that statement and the aforementioned question of black love through a series of vignettes and scenarios examining the relationships between Black men and women using six male stereotypes: The Player, a Blue Collar Worker, a Militant, an Urban Professional and Intellect, a Black Muslim, and a Pimp.

"I'm the most talked about man in America...the black man. Haunted and backed up against the wall by researchers and writers..." - Excerpt from The Diary of Black Men

The show is a remarkable presentation that passionately combines prose, poetry and dance that complements each other in a highly dramatic style. It has always been a revolutionary piece that passionately delivers art and social commentary creating an emotional response from its audience. It opens with the men perched upon pedestals in tableau. As the warm specials individually illuminates the men, they all, being true to their stereotype and character, offer their pitch to impress the lone female character in the play. The Muslim for instance, offers protection, but with it goes submission. "Come my sister, learn your place as my wife." The Player, a glib smooth operator claims, "I am all man, from head to toe." The Working Man boasts that he "always supports his family." The Militant says he's "not the problem but he is the solution." The Intellectual claims to possess "the three main ingredients any Black woman seeks in a Black man: education, intelligence, and a solid bank account." Slick, a new-age pimp, promises a better way of life brimmed with excitement and romance. The plays' one female character is an exceptional dancer, represents Black women but has no speaking part in the production.

The Diary of Black Men is a justly redeeming morality play laced with comedy and lots of revealing and provocative talk about Black men and their voice in the Human conversation.

TANGO PASIÓN @ The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto, ON - Sat Feb 18th!

MUY CALIENTE!
Nothing says “Be Mine” like
TANGO PASIÓN

ONE NIGHT ONLY!
Saturday, February 18, 2012
Sony Centre For The Performing Arts

Twenty-one years ago, Tango Argentino revitalized tango with its triumph on Broadway, and now the same producers, with choreographer Hector Zaraspe, current faculty member of The Juilliard School, proudly present their international tango spectacle, TANGO PASIÓN, on stage for one night only Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts.

Born in the brothels of 1880s Buenos Aires, the tango began as a dance and evolved into an art form treasured by its nation. Artistic Directors Mel Howard and José Libertella, accompanied by choreographer Hector Zaraspe and painter Ricardo Carpani, spent months in the heart of Buenos Aires creating this production that weaves together a collection of tango stories uncovered by a cast of dexterous dancers representing the full range of Argentine society. With a successful Broadway run, and tours in North and South America, Europe, and the Middle East, on its mantle, TANGO PASIÓN is an alluring Argentine dance musical that has made audiences wide-eyed on three continents since 1992.

"TANGO PASION is a totally flawless masterpiece of theatre for this or any season." – Best of Broadway, “Critics Corner” New York City

Set in a quaint Buenos Aires café, TANGO PASIÓN features 10 intense dancers; five women full of coquettish charm and five men of pure strength and charisma, backed live by the Tango Pasión Sexteto Orchestra.

In true Argentinean fashion, the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts is staging a post-show Tango Milonga (dance party) in the lobby of the theatre, open to all audience members. The Sony Centre’s main lobby will become an open dance floor, complete with live DJ, for an extraordinary evening of passionate dance and music.

SONY CENTRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, Toronto’s first performing arts centre, has played a defining role in the cultural life of Toronto for more than 50 years. Today, the newly renovated Sony Centre is home to a roster of national and international artists that reflect the diversity and sophistication of 21st century Toronto. In addition, the Sony Centre is dedicated to developing Toronto’s younger audiences through family programming, workshops targeted towards school-aged audiences, an under-30 membership program, and other community initiatives including an international culinary experience.
