Hot Docs Film Screening - BROTHERS HYPNOTIC @ Various Locations, Toronto, ON - Wed May 1st, Thurs May 2nd & Sun May 5th!
HOT DOCS: BROTHERS HYPNOTIC
A co-presentation by Manifesto, Fusicology and the Hot Docs Film Festival
For the eight young men in the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, “brotherhood” is literal: they’re all sons of anti-establishment jazz legend, Phil Cohran. Cohran and their mothers raised them together on Chicago’s South Side on a strict diet of jazz, funk and Black Consciousness. Family band practice began at 6am. Now grown, as they raise eight brass horns to the sky, they make music that is at once indescribably joyful, unremittingly exciting, and undeniably together. But as the brothers try to make their own way in the wide world—while playing in the streets of New York City, collaborating with Mos Def, or wowing a jazz festival—they find the values their father bred into them constantly tested. They must decide whether his principles really are their own.
Brothers Hypnotic is a coming of age story, for eight brothers, and for an ideal.

Hot Docs Film Screening - LIFE AND CRIMES OF DORIS PAYNE @ Scotiabank Theatre, Toronto, ON - Wed May 1st!
How does a poor, single, African-American mother from segregated 1950s America wind up as one of the world’s most notorious jewel thieves? Just ask her. A glamorous 81-year-old, Doris Payne is as unapologetic today about the nearly $2 million in jewels she’s stolen over a 60-year career as she was the day she stole her first carat. With Payne now on trial for the theft of a department store diamond ring, filmmakers Kirk Marcolina and Matthew Pond probe beneath her consummate smile to uncover the secrets of her trade and what drove her to a life of crime. Stylish recreations, an extensive archive and candid interviews reveal how Payne managed to jet-set her way into any Cartier or Tiffany’s from Monte Carlo to Japan and walk out with small fortunes. This sensational portrait exposes a rebel who defies society’s prejudices and pinches her own version of the American Dream while she steals your heart. Myrocia Watamaniuk

Hot Docs Film Screenings - LET THE FIRE BURN @ Various Locations, Toronto, ON - Mon Apr 29th, Tues Apr 30th & Fri May 3rd!
In 1985, a conflict between Philadelphia police and radical black liberation group MOVE reached a violent climax when the police dropped explosives onto the communal row house occupied by the group. The ensuing fire destroyed 61 homes and claimed the lives of six adults (including MOVE founder John Africa) and five children. The authorities stood by and watched the fire burn for over an hour before they extinguished the blaze. Jason Osder expertly constructs an historical context for the conflict between MOVE and the Philly police that dates back through the ‘70s. Comprised entirely of archival material, including interviews with the only two survivors of the fire and the public commission inquiry that followed the tragedy, Let the Fire Burn has a sense of immediacy and current cultural relevance as it investigates how fear, intolerance and prejudice can quickly spiral out of control.

Film Screening: MARLEY @ Isabel Bader Theatre, Thurs May 3rd & Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, Sat May 5th!
Oscar winner Kevin MacDonald (Last King of Scotland, One Day in September)
delivers the long awaited, authorized biography of reggae legend Bob
Marley. MacDonald offers an expansive yet intimate history of the larger
than life artist. The icon is remembered on a most personal level
through affectionate first-hand accounts from his family and inner
circle. He was a father, a lover, a rabid football fan and a
revolutionary, but most importantly, he was a passionate and dedicated
musician. MacDonald fully immerses us in the singer’s history through
beautiful scenes shot on location in Nine Mile and Trenchtown, rare
archival interviews and enough concert footage to satisfy even the most
devoted fans. Marley is a film that understands why Bob Marley’s influence still resonates with such strength today. Lynne Crocker

Film Screening: CBFF & Hotdocs Presents “Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story” @ TIFF Bell Lightbox 2, Tues May 1st & The ROM Theatre, Wed May 2nd!
In 1966, filmmaker Frank De Felitta made a documentary for NBC News about life in the Mississippi Delta. When it aired on television, many white Southerners were outraged at the portrayal of the South as racist, a fact that many preferred to deny. One scene in particular eventually destroyed the life of Booker Wright, an African-American man working in a ‘whites only’ restaurant. His powerful performance explaining his position serving the white community resulted in a beating so brutal he was hospitalized. Forty-six years after his televised appearance, Booker’s granddaughter, Yvette Johnson, and Frank’s son, director Raymond De Felitta, meet in Greenwood to discover what led Booker to commit his courageous act of “accidental activism.” They also explore the man’s untimely murder and uncover the role the filmmaker’s father, Frank De Felitta, played in determining his fate.

Hot Docs Film Premiere: Charles Bradley: Soul of America @ Various Theatres, Toronto, ON - Mon Apr 30th - Sat May 5th!
Fusicology Films and Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival are pleased to present the International Premiere of...
Charles Bradley: Soul of America
74 minutes
Director: Poull Brien
Hot off the heels of a stellar World Premiere at SXSW 2012, this very moving, highly buzzed about film is poised to become one of the faves of this year's Hot Docs Festival.
For decades he’s been Black Velvet, an impersonator channeling James Brown with uncanny similitude, scraping by in Brooklyn’s projects with small club gigs in the evenings and odd jobs by day. But 62-year-old Charles Bradley has an impossible dream: he wants to make it in the music industry as…himself. As if that weren’t challenge enough, he’s also supporting the mother who abandoned him as a child, struggling to pay his own bills, and, in his spare time, learning to read.
When Bradley’s noticed by the soul maestros at Daptone Records, it seems as though he just might have a chance. With lyrics that draw directly from the anguish and hardship of his life, his electrifying performances transform pain and sorrow into an experience of sublime transcendence. When he says to the audience, “I love you, each and every one of you,” he truly means it. It’s a visceral rush to your soul.
**Screenings will be preceded by the short documentary "I Beat Mike Tyson" and followed by Q&A with the director Poull Brien
