The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) celebrated a milestone this year with their 35th annual convention being held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego, CA.
The convention, which took place from July 28th to August 1st aimed to provide career opportunities for members through their career fair and networking events. NABJ also hosted workshops, an author's showcase and bookstore, several gala award events, film screenings and receptions.
With a year of turbulence in the job market, especially with an huge number of job losses in the media industry, there was some doubt whether or not attendance for this convention would match previous years. However, during the opening ceremonies, NABJ President, Kathy Times, announced "some people predicted a low turnout for this year's convention, a west coast convention, that it would be a ghost town. NABJ, we have exceeded our projected attendance."
Various well-known faces, celebrities and newsmakers attended the conference. Dr. Mehmet Oz, best known for his own highly ranked health-related daytime television show, "The Dr. Oz Show," delivered an educational series on becoming a smart patient and small steps to adjusting your life for better health.
Actress and Model, Beverly Johnson, made an appearance at "The Black List Volume III" screening and reception. The HBO project is the third installment in a series of interviews and photos with some of Black America's elite including Singer John Legend, Actress & Co-Host of the View, Whoopi Goldberg, Black Entertainment Television C.E.O., Debra Lee and Actor Hill Harper.
Director Spike Lee, who has a film slated to air on HBO in late August titled, "If God is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise," also screened it for NABJ attendees. The film is the follow up to his 2006 documentary, "When the Levees Broke," which chronicled the devastation and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans the previous year.
Shirley Sherrod, who was fired from her job as a Georgia State Director for the United States Department of Agriculture in mid-July, made an on-stage appearance at the NABJ convention. Sherrod made headlines after a conservative blogger posted excerpts of her from an NAACP speech in March of this year which made her appear to make racist remarks towards a farmer who requested financial help for his farm. Once the video was fully reviewed, the NAACP, the USDA and the White House apologized and offered her job back, however, she has not yet accepted. She also told NABJ attendees that she is considering a lawsuit and refuses to speak to Fox news who after airing the excerpt, made no effort to air the full video.
Many achievement awards were giving out during various receptions throughout the 5-day convention. Canadian Hockey Pioneer, Willie O'Ree, was a recipient of the Sam Lacy Sports Pioneer Award. O'Ree was the first Black player in the National Hockey League and managed to play despite being almost blind in one eye. In 2008, he was given the Order of Canada recognizing him for his contributions to the sport. Other awards of distinction were given out to members of the media during a Salute to Excellence Gala.
To celebrate next year's NABJ convention being held in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists (PABJ) held an All-Red Wear "Philly Love" Kick Off Party, hosted by Hip Hop Artist Monie Love, a Philly native, and Kid 'n Play's DJ, DJ Wiz.

d'bi.young's new biomyth monodrama WORD! SOUND! POWAH! @ summerworks theatre festival! OPENING SHOW on aug 7th is FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! featuring d'bi.young stxman on stx iam didgeridoo
the trilogy charts the journey of three generations of afrikan-jamaican womben: mudgu sankofa, her daughter sekesu sankofa, and sekesu's daughter benu sankofa. in word! sound! powah!, the grand-daughter of mudgu negotiates her own identity to the backdrop of a mythologized revolution and the birth of dubpoetry in jamaica. dub, mysticism, lyricism, politics, love, stick playing, didgeridoo flowing, and courage frolic in this part-real, part-fiction universe of 1970s/80s jamaica. the play reflects much of the socio-political truths that are currently plaguing the ‘little but tallawah’ island in the sun. and ultimately we are asked ‘what would we do’ if we were in the same circumstances presented.
a young dubpoet named benu has found herself swept up in the political spirit of revolution in jamaica in the 1970s. she has been arrested and the play follows her interrogation by constable brown as she recounts how the urge for arts students to express themselves poetically has led to them to imagining, lobbying and fighting for a better world and equality and prosperity for the urban poor of jamaica.
word! sound! powah! is a story of one people’s quest for justice, equality and freedom for the country that they love. it is a story that celebrates the beauty, eloquence, powah and beat of dub poetry and how it can be used to effectively ignite the fervour for change in the world. it is a story of corrupt law enforcement and lying politicians and empowered revolutionaries who refuse to forget their ancestors. at a time when torontonians have recently witnessed massive injustice on our streets and the stifling of the voices of the people by those sworn to protect them, at a time when canadians fear that their democratic values are not being reflected or enforced in the largest city in their country, word! sound! powah! is hauntingly relevant.
word! sound! powah! (in association with anitafrika dub theatre) plays at the theatre passe muraille mainspace (16 ryerson avenue) at the following times.
Toronto - One of the most anticipated summer events, the Honey Jam artist showcase, takes place at the Mod Club Theatre (722 College Street) on Sunday August 15, 2010.
Hosted by MuchMusic's Sarah Taylor, the 2010 edition promises to deliver one of the best showcases in the history of the event - a night of exciting live entertainment with a diverse group of artists as they also celebrate their 15th anniversary.
Ebonnie Rowe, Honey Jam Founder, Producer and President of PhemPhat Entertainment Group, says “It has been a wondrous, inspired and insane whirlwind of activity with many challenges and sacrifices along the way, but all worth it,” she says. ”We have made footprints in the music industry – with stiletto heels!”
Giving women a positive space to shine in the music industry – in front of and behind the scenes - is exactly why Rowe founded Honey Jam in the first place. Helping women in music soar to success is what keeps Rowe motivated despite the recent economic crisis that made it even more challenging to secure sponsorship.
Never known to let any obstacle hold back their initiatives, to supplement limited sponsorship funding, Rowe produced fundraising buttons with the quote “Honey Jam Honey, Playgirl but No Bunny!” along with organizing a raffle.
To mark the show’s milestone, in honour of their 15th anniversary and as a tribute to their most well known alumni Nelly Furtado, Honey Jam artists have recorded I’m Like a Bird." It will be available for sale on iTunes later this month with proceeds being split between funding for Honey Jam and the YWCA Toronto programs for women and girls. Studio time was generously donated by the Harris Institute for the Arts.
The showcase is revered for presenting a wide variety of genres of music and this year will be no different, with artists representing Country, Hip Hop, House, Gospel, Pop, R&B and rock. Please see http://www.honeyjam.com and click on "Artists" for the lineup.
DJs for the night include MelBoogie and Tasha Rozez. Over $10,000 in artist prizes are up for grabs, including the FLOW production prize of a track produced by Agile and the Honey Jam Hookup Prize Pack which includes sound equipment from Yamaha, consultation with a Universal Music A&R Rep, a photo shoot with Michael Alberstat, legal consultation with Taylor Mitsopolous Klein Oballa, a hair makeover by Hair2Inc., Elaine Overholt’s Big Voice DVD, and a fitness package from Think Fitness.
Sponsors for this year's show include Slaight Communications Inc., Nelstar Entertainment, TD Bank, Yamaha Canada Music, MuchMusic, VerveGirl Magazine, the New FLOW 93.5, Exclaim.ca, Universal Music Canada, The Canadian Independent Recording Artists Association, Ontario Arts Council, the SOCAN Foundation, FACTOR, Taylor Mitsopulos Klein Oballa, OMDC, Canadian Musician, Northern Response and World Vision.
Advance tickets at $20 are available at Play De Record, 357 Yonge Street, $25 at the door. Proceeds from the showcase will support YWCA Toronto's programs for women and girls - http://www.ywcatoronto.org

JERKFEST celebrates the internationally renowned ‘Jerk Cuisine’ immersed in a rich 2-day celebration of Caribbean food and culture. The picturesque Centennial Park is home to the festival again this year. This free outdoor event will showcase twenty vendors all cooking up their best versions of jerk chicken, pork, beef, lamb, seafood and vegetables. One ultimate winner will be chosen by our celebrity judges.
What is Jerk Food?
The term jerk is said to come from the word charqui, a Spanish term for jerked or dried meat, which eventually became jerky in English. Another origin is linked to the jerking or poking of the meat with a sharp object to make holes in the meat and then filling it with the spice and slow roasting over a wood fire. Jerk spiced food is popular in Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean.
Jerk All Over
When Anthony Plummer immigrated to Toronto ten years ago, he asked his friends what there was to do in this city. “They told me about Taste of the Danforth, which features Greek food. And I asked, what about Jerk food?” That’s when Plummer decided to start the JerkFest.
Now in its 9th year, the JerkFest brings the flavors of the Caribbean to Toronto. “Jerk food is loved by so many different cultures because the flavours are so powerful. Everyone loves a great juicy taste. And there’s a whole culture attached to it. It’s just the same way reggae music, Bob Marley or Jamaica as a destination has captured the world… there’s a mystique to it all, to the spice, it’s hot, it’s sexy!”
A Good Jerk?
“You really have to use potent seasonings, natural seasonings. The best jerk is left to sit and marinate. Then it is cooked very slowly over real firewood. A good jerk spice has pimento, hot pepper, scallion, garlic and thyme. It uses the different flavours of the Caribbean like nutmeg to captivate the taste buds,” says Plummer.
Food for all, fun for all!
There’s something for everyone at the JerkFest. From live stage performances, to the kid zone, to our celebrity tasting competition and our fine dining tent. Free entrance, free parking and free fun, it’s a can’t miss event!
Proceeds from JerkFest will go to the Negril Education Environment Trust, an organization in Jamaica that aims to put a book in every child’s hand and a computer in every classroom. At home here in Toronto, JerkFest has partnered with the Jamaican Canadian Association to provide a full scholarship for post secondary studies in the field of arts to a student demonstrating excellence every year.
