The African Canadian Legal Clinic and the Youth Justice Education Program will host the inaugural Imani Awards at 2pm on February 24, 2013.
 

The Imani Awards are a celebration of African heritage through a showcase of the victories and accomplishments of African Canadian youth and agencies that service African Canadian youth within the GTA. We will be recognizing these individuals and agencies by awarding them for their continued success in a variety of categories for their hard work and outstanding achievements.

 

All proceeds from this event will be used in funding a trip to Africa for a group of inner city African Canadian youth. This journey to the motherland will be geared towards connecting these youth to their African Heritage, as well as providing them with an opportunity to assist in community development projects while overseas.

16 poets from Toronto, Buffalo, Guelph, Burlington, Detroit, and Ottawa will step in to a boxing ring, each with the hope of being crowns the Last Poet Standing.

 

7 guest judges will be seated at ringside to determine the fate of each poet. This year's judges are, Juno Award Winner, Jully Black, Olympian, Perdita Felicien, World DMC Turntable Champion, DJ Dopey, Grey Cup Champion, Toronto Argonaut, Jordan Younger, MTV Live Comedian, Dave Merheje, Dub Poet, Lillian Allen, and Hip Hop Artist, D-Sisive. Lorraine Klaasen - A Tribute to Mirium Makeba @ Art Gallery of Hamilton, Hamilton, ON - Fri Feb 22nd!

Lorraine Klaasen, eclectic performer extraordinaire, is the daughter of the famous South African singer Thandie Klaasen, one of Nelson Mandela’s favourite singers and an indisputable South African legend. Born and raised in South Africa, she has called Montreal her home since 1979. Lorraine’s dynamic stage presence and showmanship have captivated fans or world music, jazz and African music throughout North America, the Caribbean and Europe for many years. In fact, Klaasen is a virtual embodiment of cultural diversity. Performing in English, French, Swahili, Zulu, Xhosa, Lingala, Greek and Hebrew, as well as over 12 African dialects, audiences are spellbound by her winning combination of humour charisma and savoir faire. Musicologist, singer and choreographer, Klaasen is highly adept at conveying emotion through movement and dance, an integral and distinctive expression of African song. Her productions present the finest African rhythms. “Living in Canada and playing with musicians from the diasporas of the Caribbean, Haiti and Quebec has informed by art and enlarged my music tremendously,” says Klaasen. Her upbeat musical style manages to embrace a myriad of cultures at once. Klaasen’s exuberance and infectious style often result in a captive audience; inevitably they are shouting loudly for more after the last notes have been played.

Karriem Riggins w/ mymanhenri & DJ Taktiks @ Wrongbar, Toronto, ON - Fri Feb 22nd!

The Karriem Riggins types do not come around twice in a lifetime. Not too many artists have worked so closely with some of the greatest luminaries in hip hop (Common, J Dilla, Madlib, Kanye West, Slum Village, The Roots & Erykha Badu), whilst still maintaining a solid grounding in jazz backing the likes of Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Donald Byrd, Bobby Hutcherson, Ron Carter as well Grammy winner and Canada's own Diana Krall. But at that inflection point sits the Detroit native Karriem Riggins.

Karriem Riggins' talents speak largely for themselves. Following in his father's footsteps as a jazz musician, and then becoming a maestro on the Akai MPC, he performed, produced, arranged and mixed seamlessly between hip hop and jazz, with dozens of credits to his name. He also collaborated with former Beatles Paul McCartney in concert as well on Kisses on the Bottom, McCartney’s first studio release in five years. He even found the time to rap on record with Madlib as Supreme Team/Jahari Masamba. But after keeping a hectic touring schedule as jazz drummer, Karriem Riggins finally celebrated the October release of his 1st solo LP Alone/Together with SoCal's Stones Throw.

Having emerged from the legendary hip hop period that spawned Slum Village and J Dilla, Karriem Riggins' 34-track instrumental album Alone Together signaled his "return to the machines", including the famed Akai MPC - how he produces and expresses himself freely.

Friday February 22nd 2013, Karriem Riggins returns to Toronto for an exclusive set, playing his fave jazz grooves, hip hop tracks and of course - beats. Joining him are both Taktiks (Mixtape Massacre) and mymanhenri (92bpm.com)
