Highlights of the NABJ Convention in Tampa, Florida
The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) held their annual convention August 5th - 9th in Tampa, Florida. Workshops, learning labs and the career fair were well-attended by members from all areas of the journalism field. Special events during the convention included the Hall of Fame Luncheon and the Salute to Excellence Gala which was MC'd by CNN's T.J. Holmes and recognized special Honorees--Michele Norris, National Public Radio, Journalist of the Year; Michael Wilbon, The Washington Post, Lifetime Achievement Award and Cynthia Gordy, Essence Magazine, Emerging Journalist of the Year.
Cleveland Cavaliers' Basketball Star Lebron James held a press conference for his movie "More than a Game" which is set to be released this fall. Director Kristopher Belman and Coach Dru Joyce II were also on hand to discuss the making of the film which began as a school project. All were interviewed by former New York Giants Running Back turned Sports Broadcaster, Tiki Barber.
Actor & Comedian Chris Rock also premiered his new documentary movie "Good Hair" with co-star Actress Nia Long. The pair were interviewed by New York-based Producer/Writer Patrick Riley and answered questions from the audience after the movie.
Other celebrity appearances included: Tom Joyner who held his annual party at the Florida Aquariam with guest DJ Kid Capri; Anika Noni Rose, co-star of "Dreamgirls" who performed as part of a special sneak preview for Disney's upcoming film, "The Princess and the Frog" and a Skype interview with Steve Harvey.
