Wednesday March 30, Eternal Sunrise: A Benefit for Japan takes place at Revival Bar at 783 College Street. MuchMusic’s Sarah Taylor will host the event in support of Plan Canada’s relief efforts in Japan.
The Japanese earthquake & tsunami have caused extensive and severe damage in Northeastern Japan, leaving thousands of people confirmed dead, injured or missing, and millions more affected by lack of electricity, water and transportation. As an added cause for serious concern, Japan is now battling safety issues and severe radiation as a result of damage to its nuclear power infrastructure.
Caroline Shaheed of OfTheNow.ca and Marc de Breyne of PawnShopRecords.com have banded together with a fantastic team to show Japan that we care.
The evening will also feature a food stand from Caplansky’s Smoked Meats, a raffle and silent auction with more than 50 different items up for bid such as Raptors vs Heat Tickets, gift baskets, concert tickets, jewelry, dinner gift cards, clothing, artwork and much more. Auction items will be available to take home that night, and are payable by cash or credit card. The auction ends at midnight and winners will be announced immediately after.
Here is another opportunity to support those in need. Wayne Wright of Mic and Soul will be donating $1.00 from each ticket purchased on Sunday, March 27th to earthquake victims in Japan. Please see attached flyer for details on performers.
Juno Week officially kicked off on Monday, March 21st with the first-ever Juno Hoops Celebrity Basketball game, which was put together by a team led by DJ Jude Kelly. The event was held at Ryerson University's Kerr Hall Gymnasium.
Players included R&B Singers Ray Robinson and Aion Clarke (aka Voice Alexander); Producer and DJ Skratch Bastid; DJ Future the Prince (Drake's Official Tour DJ); Spoken Word Artist, Dwayne Morgan; DJ DOC (Host of CHRY 105.5FM's "Island Explosion" show on Thursday mornings); Radio Personality, Devo Brown formerly of Flow 93.5FM and former professional Basketball Player and Urban Music Association of Canada (UMAC) President, Will Strickland.
Mark Strong, the voice of the Toronto Raptors home games, was the event MC and eTalk's Tanya Kim and Jazz Artist, Archie Alleyne served as honourable Coaches. Olympic double gold medallist Sprinter Donovan Bailey also attended the game but sat on the sidelines, while Recording Artist, Glenn Lewis, was also there, but unable to play as he was nursing a foot injury. Proceeds of the event will support MusiCounts, a Canadian music charity that helps to keep music alive in schools across Canada.
Well, if you didn't get a chance to go to Trinidad Carnival earlier this month and jump up to some sweet soca music, you had an opportunity to experience a little bit of it at Dr. Jay's Sold Out Return Fete at the Kool Haus in Downtown, Toronto, ON. And, if you missed that too, then you really lucked out!
On Saturday, March 19th, DJ Dr. Jay de Soca Prince had his annual Return Fete with a line-up of superstar soca performers. This year more than 1500 soca fans got a special appearance by Kes the Band, who was just crowned the Groovy Soca Monarch at Trinidad's Carnival earlier this month for his huge hit, "Wotless."
Putting on an incredibly energetic show, Kes the Band was also joined by Nadia Batson, Shal Marshall, Tallpree, Lyrical, Umba, Skinny Fabulous and Kerwin duBois. Benjai, whose hits "Trini" and "Wine to de side" are tearing up the socawaves, was originally scheduled to perform but had to cancel out after being asked by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago to attend another event.
On Sunday, March 9th, I had the opportunity to bring an extremely excited group of young people from the Scarborough Youth Resource Centre (SYRC) to the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, to watch the hometown Toronto Raptors take on the Charlotte Bobcats.
For most of these youths, it was their first time attending a basketball game and visiting the Air Canada Centre. And, even though the Raptors played a decent game, they lost 95-90. But, it didn't matter to the group. Just being amongst a boisterous crowd and watching the teams battle it out was such a thrill.
The event was made possible through the tremendous support of sponsors, Promoter Eddie Williams of Party People Productions and everyone who supported his annual birthday party that was held on February 26th at the Six Degrees Venue.
For the last four years, Williams has hosted his annual "Party for a Purpose" birthday event. The proceeds from the event are used to finance the purchase of tickets for youths, 10-17 years of age, to attend a Toronto Raptors home basketball game.
The initiative to send at-risk youth and families to a basketball game program began in February 2008, shortly after my son Keegan Allen, was shot while attending a dance competition in Toronto on Thanksgiving weekend in 2007. On October 9th, after being on life support for a couple of days, he passed away from his injuries at the age of 18. Keegan spent much of his life attending programs in SYRC and its parent organization, Tropicana Community Centre. Tropicana is an organization that has been so near and dear to my heart for more than an decade. So, I'm honoured to be part of this experience where I can continue to be involved with youth in memory of my son.
A Black History Month Essay Writing Contest, sponsored in part by Party People Productions, is the selection process that is used to determine the kids who win the opportunity to attend the game. The contest is made available to several after-school programs across the GTA as well to all members of the Tropicana Youth Service Group of Scarborough.
Special thanks to the staff, youth, and Manager, Cameal Johnson from the SYRC; Eddie Williams, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and to all of you who participated in any way to make this a special day!
Information about SYRC:
The Scarborough Youth Resource Centre (SYRC) is a division of Tropicana Community Services located in the Scarborough Town Centre Mall. Recently celebrating its 15th year anniversary, the SYRC operates successfully as a drop-in service and is dedicated to providing a safe space and building a sense of community for youth aged 12 to 24, as well as offering a range of activities, programs and resources that promote opportunities for personal development, employment and empowerment.
Last year, the SYRC served 8,500 youth who accessed the drop-in services (phone, fax, and computers) and the core programs that focus on self-expression through peer support, personal development and dance. Tropicana Community Services is a United Way Member Agency.
Keegan's Involvement with SYRC and Tropicana
Keegan Allen was senselessly shot at an all-ages dance event at the Hungarian House Cultural Centre on Monday October 8, 2007. At just 18 years old, he passed away the following day from his injuries.
Keegan, who adopted the nickname “Speckz” because he wore eyeglasses, was a popular young man in Grade 12 who loved dancing, video games and computers.
Since early childhood, Keegan attended Tropicana's day camps, after school programs, tutoring classes and in 2006, completed the 40 hour community services requirement that is necessary for Ontario students to graduate. He did it by helping out at the SYRC after school. He had planned to study video game design or computer technology upon graduation.
SYRC's Youth Participation
Since Keegan Allen's untimely passing in October 2007, several events spearheaded by SYRC youth have been held to commemorate and celebrate his life while providing inspiring non-violence messages. On the one year anniversary of his death, the month of October was dedicated to Keegan with various activities such as poetry and video game days, ending with an event called The Speckz Effect in which several talented youth, most of whom were his peers, expressed their talents through song, dance and drama. About 150 youth, community members and the media were in attendance. SYRC still continues to hold events every October in honour of Keegan.

The music industry is mourning the loss of another veteran. Singer and Hip Hop Artist, Nathaniel "Nate Dogg" Hale, reportedly passed away last night in his home town, Long Beach, California at the age of 41.
His cause of death is unknown, however, he had been battling health issues for some time following two strokes--one in December 2007 and another in 2008 which paralyzed the left side of his body.
As a child, Nate Dogg sang in church. After dropping out of high school and serving three years in the United States Marine Corps, Nate Dogg started out in the music industry in 1991 in a group called 213 with his cousin, Snoop Dogg and Warren G. The group made a demo and in 2003, and after Music Producer, Dr. Dre, heard it, Nate Dogg was signed to Death Row Records.
Nate Dogg was a huge contributor to the popularity of the west coast hip hop music scene and a major collaborator with many notable hip hop artists including Tupac Shakur, Ludacris, Ghostface Killah, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Mack 10, Obie Trice, Fabolous and The Game, with more than 40 tracks topping the music charts. As a solo artist, he released three albums.
Nate Dogg was a four-time Grammy nominee in the Rap category for the collaborations he did with Eminem, "Shake That" in 2007; Ludacris, "Area Codes" in 2002; Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, "The Next Episode" in 2001 and his first and one of his best known hits that he produced with Warren G, "Regulate" in 2005.
Last November, Warren G had appealed to fans to make contributions to go to Nate Dogg's rehabilitation therapy.
Despite his health, Nate Dogg had formed a Los Angeles based gospel choir called, InNate Praise in 2007. TMZ reports that current American Idol contestant, Jacob Lusk, was a member of the choir and they performed at churches across the city.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced at this time.
