What has it meant to be a Black star over the years? What are the historical, social and political conditions that have informed notions of Black stardom? Beginning November 3rd, the BFI's celebrated Black Star comes to TIFF celebrating a range of influential figures from Hollywood icons like Sidney Poitier, Lena Horne and Denzel Washington to independent trailblaizers like Oscar Micheaux, Marlon Riggs and Barbara O. Jones. Explore the vibrancy and resilience of Black representation in cinema with a programme that spans decades, with over 40 films screened, including:
