Toronto’s top comedians honor moms with laughter.

What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than to put a smile on her face?

The perfect gift for your mom is a ticket to the annual Trinidad vs Jamaica Mother’s Day Comedy Clash, Sunday May 12th at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

The masterminds behind the clean comedy show are Jay Martin and Jean Paul, two of Canada’s most popular comics. The pair host the comedy show that has comedians from each of their native islands battle it out in a clean joke off. Jean Paul came up with the idea while attending an international comedy show in Jamaica 8 years ago and shared the idea with long time Jamaican friend Jay Martin. Jean Paul is full of Trinidadian pride; although he’s lived in Canada since age 13 his parents made sure he never forgot his roots. Jean Paul is fiercely close to his Trini mama.

“I knew I wanted to be a comedian at the age of eleven or twelve and my mom was very supportive. I don’t think a lot of parents would support their child’s dream of wanting to be a comedian,” says Paul.

For Jay Martin, the annual event is a way to honor his late mother. Jay lost his mom to cancer on his sixteenth birthday. This year Jay’s youngest daughter Jalesa was diagnosed with Lupus and with May being Lupus awareness month. “This year a part of our proceeds will go to the Lupus & Cancer foundations.” says Martin.

The comedy show is unique because it offers a family environment for people of all ages to enjoy themselves. “Every year we provide a clean fun show for people from any island to come spend quality time with their mothers,” says Martin. “Nobody knows more than me how important it is to cherish the time you have with your mom.”

“I’m proud to have the opportunity to bring family entertainment every Mother’s Day,” says Jean Paul. “My favorite part is always the opening, walking out and seeing the anticipation of laughter on the faces of people from my community.”

The comedy show will also host a sound clash between DJs Bass VS DJ Tyrone.

The comedians ready for Sunday’s battle for Team Jamaica are:
Jay Martin,
Cedric Newman &
Kathy Grant

and for Team Trinidad:
Jean Paul,
Marvin Ishmael,
Sterling Scott.
