Rhythmfest @ Heritage Park, Barrie, ON - Sat Aug 9th!

Rhythmfest

Featuring Samba Squad, Messenjah, Joy Lapps

Celebrate the universal language of rhythm at this 5th annual interactive festival. The festivities will feature entertainment, workshops, food, and merchandise from around the world. Grab an instrument and be part of it!

Rhythmfest takes place Friday August 8: Holly Community Park, 5pm–10pm (Educators Workshop & Kick-Off Performances) and Saturday August 9: Heritage Park, 10am–10pm with two stages. Muhtadi International Drumming Festival Alumni Muhtadi & The World Drummers 11:00 am, Samba Squad 12:20 pm & Joy Lapps 8:00 pm are all featured on the main stage.

MIDF Founder and Artistic Director, Muhtadi will give a drumming workshop on the main stage at 10:30 am, followed by a performance with the World Drummers. “The World Drummers comprise up to 70 members all of whom walked off the street and learned to play the African drum at that centre.” Muhtadi said. “They come from all parts of the world, including Poland, Serbia, Pakistan, England and France”.

Founded by award-winning percussionist Rick Shadrach Lazar, Samba Squad is an innovative group that is forging new directions by mixing world rhythms with the sound-power and street-feel of the drums of the Afro-Brazilian Samba tradition.

The SQUAD’s 16-plus-member ‘percussion posse’ busts out in energy and excitement. Samba Squad embodies the joy of embracing different cultures, and is the personification of change and exchange.

Featuring members of all ages and backgrounds, The SQUAD is a microcosm of cosmopolitan Toronto. We respect traditions while adding original influences to create one of the most exhilarating musical experiences in Canada.

SAMBA SQUAD had evolved from a community-based drumming group into one of the most dynamic and sought-after acts on the Canadian World Music scene.

Messenjah Returns Headlines Rhythmfest 2014

Messenjah, one of the most successful and popular reggae groups in the history of Canadian music are back together again headlining Rhythmfest at 9:00 pm.

Messanjah 2014

Messanjah was recently featured in Rolling Stone’s article Informer: A Brief History of Canadian Reggae on July 23, 2014.

“Formerly cool Canadian moms and dads of all ethnicities have fond memories of Messenjah. Back in the 1980s, Bob Marley had left an indelible impression on popular music and the band behind tunes like “Arrested” and “Cool Operator” found widespread success with tours that focused on a burgeoning reggae stronghold: college campuses. Not long after releasing their debut album, Rock You High, Messenjah became the first Canadian reggae band to be picked up by a major music label, Warner Music Canada, and even scored a minor hit in Jamaica, 1984′s “Jam Session.” A.M.”

The Juno Award winning band had five hits during its heyday from 1981 to 1998, when it packed Ontario Place, Maple Leaf Gardens and other venues across North America.
