This year’s festival begins with multi-award winning Trinidadian-born trumpeter Brownman Ali paying tribute to legendary trumpet player Freddie Hubbard. This show features a set investigating Hubbard’s acoustic material from the Blue Note record label, followed by a set exploring his electric output on the CTI label. Brownman Ali is heralded by the New York Village Voice as “Canada’s preeminent jazz trumpet player”, has won several National Jazz Awards, is considered a vanguard for the evolution of jazz in Canada — and, like most jazz trumpet pros, has always been one of Freddie Hubbard’s greatest admirers.

SOCIALIST NIGHT SCHOOL
@ Club 120 (upstairs), 120 Church St. Website
:: Big Band, $20 door / $15 adv
Chelsea McBride’s Socialist Night School is an 18-piece big band led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Chelsea McBride. The band is a collective of emerging & established Toronto musicians, including Brownman Ali and Colleen Allen. Described as “a fresh new voice on the Canadian jazz scene ” by saxophonist and composer Andy Ballantyne, the band has performed at major venues across the city, including sold-out shows at Rex Hotel and the mainstage at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. The Socialist Night School is a different sounding big band, drifting away from the typical swing charts in favour of a more contemporary sound. The Socialist Night School is influenced by artsy, everyday stuff like politics, nature, city living, but also by ECM-style jazz, Maria Schneider, Bob Brookmeyer, and Darcy James Argue. Bandleader Chelsea McBride writes and arranges much of the music, but other band members get a chance to write and solo for the band – it is socialist after all.

Vocalist/songwriter Jordana Talsky has been turning heads on the Toronto jazz terrain for the last five years, her sound — described as “jazzy takes on pop songs and poppier takes on jazz songs” — combines many music forms, rather than strictly adhering to a single genre. She was a finalist in the 2014 John Lennon Songwriting Competition (RnB category) for an original composition on the album; a semi-finalist in the 2014 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition; and Runner Up for the Julian Award of Excellence for Emerging Canadian Artists (CJSF Radio, Simon Fraser University). Accompanied by only one other musician, Jordana will delight audiences in this stripped down duo format.
