Caribbean Summit Afternoon Concerts
Ernest Ranglin, with Jay Douglas and Everton “Pablo” Paul (2:00 PM)
Widely credited as the founding father of Jamaican ska,
guitarist Ernest Ranglin has been called “the most important musician to
emerge from Jamaica” by Island Records’ founder Chris Blackwell. In
1964, Ranglin played guitar on singer Millie Small’s
My Boy Lollipop, the
international hit that put ska on the map, paving the way for Bob
Marley and all of reggae music. Accompanying Ranglin will be Jay Douglas
and Everton “Pablo” Paul with their Jamaica to Toronto bandmates.
Calypso Rose (3:00 PM)
The West Indies’ long-reigning Queen of Calypso, McArtha Lewis
(aka Calypso Rose), began singing at age 15 in her native Tobago.
Throughout her five-decade career she has scored a steady string of
calypso hits and shared stages with Bob Marley, Miriam Makeba, Roberta
Flack and Michael Jackson.
