Two quintets in particular featuring 2 tenor saxophone giants dominated Miles' musical life almost exclusively from the mid fifties, right up until the seventies, one featuring John Coltrane and the other featuring Wayne Shorter. This period would feature an assortment of quintets and sextets all pushing the boundaries of improvisation within a simple modal framework, but the two teamings that would leave the world breathless would be those of Coltrane and Shorter. Of those two teamings it would be the Miles-Shorter pairing that would result in some of the most explosively creative & exploratory jazz in Miles' history. "Live at the Plugged Nickel" (Columbia / Legacy '65) continues to be a paramount recording in the great Miles lineage and considered by many to be some of the most ground-breaking jazz in history.

Unfortunately, I have to announce that Socacize boot camp at the new Scarborough venue scheduled for today has been postponed. At the very last minute (yesterday) the proprietor of the venue informed me that they could not accommodate the event. As many of you know, we had outgrown our last venue in capacity.

Currently, we are looking for another venue in Scarborough. We will provide an update no later than Wednesday October 19th. Once we get a venue, we will be running the entire 6 sessions.

An Antiguan Supernatural Thriller

The Antiguan supernatural thriller 'The Skin’ recently screened in Toronto at the Caribbean Tales Film Showcase to great reviews. For those of you who missed the initial screening, you now have an opportunity to see an encore screening before it leaves Canada.

The Skin is based on Caribbean mythology and set in Antigua and Barbuda when a young couple encounter strange occurrences after they find and sell an ancient artifact. This highly anticipated new feature is written and directed by Howard Allen, produced by Mitzi Benjamin-Allen, and executively produced by HAMAfilms, Antigua.

Benjamin-Allen is best known for being the first Black television news reporter on CFTO television in the 1980’s. She is one half of Antigua’s film industry power couple of HamaFilms, a film and television production company she started with her husband, Howard Allen after relocating to Antigua & Barbuda.

Many people know this dynamic duo from their first feature, 'The Sweetest Mango' in 2001 and now with this new feature film which premiered in Antigua & Barbuda in June, HAMAfilms is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the Caribbean Film Industry.

The Skin stars renowned Jamaican film star Carl Bradshaw, best known for roles in iconic films such as The Harder They Come, Dance Hall Queen, and Third World Cop. Canadian actor Peter Williams (Stargate SGI, A Winter Tale, and Da Kink in My Hair) also stars in the film, along with UK actor Jeff Stewart (The Bill, Dead Man Running and True Horrors).

Melodies of the Heart, vol. 2 will be taking place on Thanksgiving Weekend, Sunday, October 9th, 2011 at the legendary El Mocambo, 464 Spadina Ave, Toronto.

Melodies of the Heart is a quarterly concert series that is showcasing live entertainers under the title Melodies of the Heart. Together with the support of our amazingly talented Canadian artists, these events will result in the growth of awareness of Canadian Art and Culture and Urban music here in Canada. It will also foster as a medium where young entertainers can meet to express themselves and market their products directly to their fans while raising funds for charities.

The second event in this series will be a live concert to benefit Sickle Cell Association of Ontario and Red Cross for Africa Relief taking place on Thanksgiving weekend, Sunday, October 9th, 2011 inside the legendary El Mocambo, 464 Spadina Ave, Toronto (Spadina @ College).

Featuring some of Canada’s top Urban and Reggae performers all backed by Iauwata & H.I.M Band; artists such as Juno Award Winner Korexion, Juno Award Winner Sonia Collymore, Eyesus and RnB Sensation Carlos Morgan to name a few. There will also be an after party with some of Toronto’s top Urban Djs such as Tasha Roses, Suppa Natty, Bigga Boss, DJ King Sharpe and Soul Vibes.

We are currently looking for sponsorships to this event and its continuous series thereafter. TORONTO – September 13, 2011 – As part of the 2011 pan-Canadian volunteer movement,
www.CultureDays.ca, FYI – Follow Your Instinct Arts Organization announces FYI Culture Fest inside the Toronto Centre For The Arts! FYI’s Culture Fest will help to raise awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians within urban creative arts and showcase the cultural life of their communities.

“It gives me great pleasure to use such a platform to showcase the impact urban music and culture has had on our community at large,” states Dwayne Dixon, founder of the not-for-profit FYI Arts Organization and current VP, of UMAC, The Urban Music Association of Canada.

FYI’s Culture Fest consists of 3 events which will launch on September 29th with a free Artist Appreciation Night (Part 1) inside Harlem Restaurant (67 Richmond Street East, Toronto), followed on October 01 by Above Par, a free round table discussion with some architects and prodigies of the urban music scene in Canada.

“Our panelists will provide a 360 degree view of urban music culture in Canada and how we've gone from having uber pride to low esteem right back to becoming the "new" hot spot for Urban Music period, not just in Canada” said Dixon. Lastly, closing out the Culture Fest is FYI Showcase (Part 3).

Since it’s launch 19 months ago, FYI Showcase has provided development and professional opportunities to several emerging and established artists, and has been instrumental in providing a consistent outlet for urban artists in this country. Music industry veteran, Aisha Wickham-Thomas will provide the Keynote Speech at The Showcase event on Saturday evening,

This three-part event will also see the official introduction of FYI Kids. FYI Kids provides enrichment programming aimed to reinforce and further develop confidence, self-esteem and stage presence in school-aged children through music, sport & culture. Included in their “culture” component, braille classes are offered to bring vision-health awareness to the fore. “Over the past 2 years we’ve had over
1000 children come thru our program and you’d be surprised just how far a little TLC can go” - Kirt Milligin, FYI Kids Program Director.

FYI Culture Fest will showcase the best local talent and community organizations across all 3 events and culminate with a 2 hour, interactive show that invites the public/audience to participate in Canadian urban culture and discover the world of urban artists, facilitators, and authors at work in their community.

“FYI Culture Fest” will give participants a taste of what it takes to become a professional performing/recording artist in the Urban Music Industry and highlight the powerful impact on it’s community.

R & B Singer/Actress Vesta Williams Dies at 53

R&B singer and Actress, Vesta Williams was reportedly found dead in a California hotel on Thursday, September 22. According to TMZ, reports indicate that prescription pills were found on the scene and that the police are treating this as an accident or possible suicide. A toxicology examination will take about six weeks.

Williams, who was 53 at the time of her death, was best known for her 1989 hit "Congratulations." She also had some success with other eighties hits like "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and "Sweet, Sweet Love." As an Actress, she made several appearances on the television show, 'Sister, Sister' starring, Jackee Harry, where she played Harry's best friend, Monica. She was featured as a saloon singer in Mario Van Peebles' film, Posse.

Williams had struggled with weight, getting up to a size 26 after she lost her recording contract. She eventually lost 100 pounds, getting down to a size six and became an advocate for childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes.

On October 22nd, she will be remembered at the 21st annual "Divas Simply Singing" to be held in Los Angeles. The event will also honour another R&B singer, Teena Marie, who passed away last year. Williams was scheduled to perform at this event.

Williams leaves behind an adult daughter.
