As a new event, in its third year, VOV Gala looks forward to becoming a fixture on Toronto’s social event calendar. Guests from the music, art and design, fashion, and corporate communities will enjoy an evening of cocktails, and dancing against the backdrop of installations, spoken word, an amazing silent auction and performances by cutting edge contemporary
Canadian artists.

The evening plays out in two parts; the VIP cocktail reception from 7:30 - 9pm will be comprised of our Executive Director Dr. Roz Roach honoring former residents of the Healing Place who have re-invented their lives and become independent and self-sufficient members of the community. These women will be awarded with a custom designed necklace from local Toronto designer Sally Han and her jewelry line Psalms 91:1.

The VIP reception will be privy to an array of entertainment with the evening being hosted by “one of Canada’s fastest rising black comics” comedian Jason Martin and special performances by spoken word artist Victoria Grant and Juno nominated singer Kim Davis. From 9pm and onwards the night will end with the ultimate After Party

The Cause

This glamorous evening out is designed to raise funds to support the programs at Dr. Roz's Healing Place that help to empower and rebuild the lives of women and their children who are victims and survivors of abuse.

DHRP is a centre for empowerment and healing that works towards the eradication of violence against women and their children locally, nationally and globally. The aim for our Annual Gala is to not only raise funds to sustain the work the centre does for the community but also to support our capital campaign to build The Changa House, a centre for youth
and youth-at-risk.

On Thursday October 20, 2011 our overall mission is to raise awareness and funds for this cause and we hope you will

FIRST TIME PLAYWRIGHT IS A HIT WITH AUDIENCES, RETURNS FOR ENCORE SHOWS

Private Pain in Public Pews played to sold out audiences when it debuted in Toronto last Spring. Now, first time playwright Dr. Elaine Brown Spencer is giving more people the chance to see everyone’s new favourite gospel show. With absolutely no theatrical training, Dr. Elaine Brown Spencer’s FIRST play is a timeless production that the church community has fully embraced. It’s now back for encore performances in Ajax, Brampton and Ottawa!

The play deals with church secrets and the private lives that hold them. It’s no secret the Christian church has been experiencing a period of turbulence. From the Pulpit to the Pew, leaders and laypersons are falling from their pedestals one after the next with scandals of infidelity, double lives and money obsessions. But the real secrets are embedded in the stories of pain behind these scandals. And that’s where this theatrical stage play, Private Pain in Public Pews comes in.

The story focuses on Minister Terry and his wife Lydia who are admired by the congregation. But their picture perfect image is threatened when Terry’s old flame Tia, weasels her way back into his life. Terry tries hard to run from his past but ends up hitting a brick wall.

“The play addresses what we all know has gone on in the church, but we’re too afraid to talk about,” says Spencer. “It’s dramatic, thought provoking and funny! A bit of humor makes difficult issues much easier to talk about.”

Dr. Elaine Brown Spencer is a professor of Social Work at York University. It was through Divine inspiration along with her background in counseling that ultimately led her to write the book and adapt it into a play. “I was writing down some advice to share with a church member who seemed to be going through some hard times. And when I started writing I literally couldn’t stop. Those jottings translated into a book, which was the basis of the stage play”.

Whether you’re a churchgoer or not, you will be moved by this play, Private Pain in Public Pews will give you a lot to think AND laugh about. It’s a play that crosses all boundaries of traditional gospel theatre. It’s real, honest, and heartfelt. Don’t miss your chance to experience the show that will keep you on the edge of your pew.

Two quintets in particular featuring 2 tenor saxophone giants dominated Miles' musical life almost exclusively from the mid fifties, right up until the seventies, one featuring John Coltrane and the other featuring Wayne Shorter. This period would feature an assortment of quintets and sextets all pushing the boundaries of improvisation within a simple modal framework, but the two teamings that would leave the world breathless would be those of Coltrane and Shorter. Of those two teamings it would be the Miles-Shorter pairing that would result in some of the most explosively creative & exploratory jazz in Miles' history. "Live at the Plugged Nickel" (Columbia / Legacy '65) continues to be a paramount recording in the great Miles lineage and considered by many to be some of the most ground-breaking jazz in history.

An Antiguan Supernatural Thriller

The Antiguan supernatural thriller 'The Skin’ recently screened in Toronto at the Caribbean Tales Film Showcase to great reviews. For those of you who missed the initial screening, you now have an opportunity to see an encore screening before it leaves Canada.

The Skin is based on Caribbean mythology and set in Antigua and Barbuda when a young couple encounter strange occurrences after they find and sell an ancient artifact. This highly anticipated new feature is written and directed by Howard Allen, produced by Mitzi Benjamin-Allen, and executively produced by HAMAfilms, Antigua.

Benjamin-Allen is best known for being the first Black television news reporter on CFTO television in the 1980’s. She is one half of Antigua’s film industry power couple of HamaFilms, a film and television production company she started with her husband, Howard Allen after relocating to Antigua & Barbuda.

Many people know this dynamic duo from their first feature, 'The Sweetest Mango' in 2001 and now with this new feature film which premiered in Antigua & Barbuda in June, HAMAfilms is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the Caribbean Film Industry.

The Skin stars renowned Jamaican film star Carl Bradshaw, best known for roles in iconic films such as The Harder They Come, Dance Hall Queen, and Third World Cop. Canadian actor Peter Williams (Stargate SGI, A Winter Tale, and Da Kink in My Hair) also stars in the film, along with UK actor Jeff Stewart (The Bill, Dead Man Running and True Horrors).

Melodies of the Heart, vol. 2

Melodies of the Heart, vol. 2 will be taking place on Thanksgiving Weekend, Sunday, October 9th, 2011 at the legendary El Mocambo, 464 Spadina Ave, Toronto.

Melodies of the Heart is a quarterly concert series that is showcasing live entertainers under the title Melodies of the Heart. Together with the support of our amazingly talented Canadian artists, these events will result in the growth of awareness of Canadian Art and Culture and Urban music here in Canada. It will also foster as a medium where young entertainers can meet to express themselves and market their products directly to their fans while raising funds for charities.

The second event in this series will be a live concert to benefit Sickle Cell Association of Ontario and Red Cross for Africa Relief taking place on Thanksgiving weekend, Sunday, October 9th, 2011 inside the legendary El Mocambo, 464 Spadina Ave, Toronto (Spadina @ College).

Featuring some of Canada’s top Urban and Reggae performers all backed by Iauwata & H.I.M Band; artists such as Juno Award Winner Korexion, Juno Award Winner Sonia Collymore, Eyesus and RnB Sensation Carlos Morgan to name a few. There will also be an after party with some of Toronto’s top Urban Djs such as Tasha Roses, Suppa Natty, Bigga Boss, DJ King Sharpe and Soul Vibes.

We are currently looking for sponsorships to this event and its continuous series thereafter. For Sponsorship, please email your contact information and if possible let us know in what way you can potentially be involved in this great cause. Together we will strive for harmony with Melodies of the Heart here in our community.
