Imani Perry: Looking for Lorraine

Tue Apr 16, 2019
7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
60 mins

Location:   Toronto Reference Library, Bram & Bluma Appel Salon, 789 Yonge Street, Toronto, ON

Imani Perry is the Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University. She is the author of several books, most recently Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry.

Exploring the inspiration behind Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, Perry also uncovers the playwright's fight against racism and homophobia. This 2018 New York Times Notable Book is a revealing portrait of one of the most gifted and charismatic, yet least understood, Black artists and intellectuals of the twentieth century.

Hear Imani Perry discuss her powerful biography of Lorraine Hansberry--a life full of creation, tragically cut short. In conversation with Ravi Jain.

Q&A and book signing to follow. Books available for purchase.

Please don't print your tickets! We're trying to reduce paper waste for Salon events, so please don't bother printing your ticket. We'll either scan your ticket on your smartphone or quickly find your name on our tablets and check you in.

Arrive early, meet people. The talk starts at 7 pm, but doors open at 6 pm, so come early so you can chat with some of your fellow literature lovers, and make new friends. As with all Salon events, we'll have a full bar with a selection of beers, wine, and liquor, as well as sandwiches and snacks.

A note about tickets: As most Appel Salon events are free, it is our policy to overbook. In case of a full program, your ticket reservation may not guarantee admission. We recommend you arrive early.
