Shot in Trinidad in February 2013 during Carnival, we experience the charge of this bacchanalian drama before following the characters return to their separate lives. In the cold light of day, can these young lovers from very different backgrounds stay true to their desires?

A richly textured film about identity, desire and conformity, After Mas had its world premiere at the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival in September 2013 where it picked up the Best Local Short award.

The film follows a Garifuna language teacher, Ricardo, as he struggles to preserve his fading culture by building a language school back in his home village in Honduras. A business venture with his brother Miguel designed to raise money for the school’s construction becomes complicated by the expansion plans of a nearby tourist resort, prompting Ricardo to confront land rights issues in tandem with his educational mission. Family tensions heighten when Miguel waivers in the face of pressure from the resort, and Ricardo’s wife Becky objects to her daughter Helena’s new boyfriend Gabriel. Historical parallels to the contemporary land struggle are invoked as Ricardo’s son Elijah rehearses a stage play about Garifuna hero and Paramount Chief, Joseph Satuyé and his last stand against British colonialism on the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean over 200 years ago.

Their goal is to establish a successful mechanic’s shop to get away from their boring jobs as security guards, their loving yet eccentric and demanding families, and poor standard of living in their village – Pickletons. The simple task of making their down-payment to the garage owner at the village lime that night is hilariously complicated by Romie’s love-life, and Pack’s love for cannabis. The chaos and laughs multiply as the best friends go to extremes to avoid violent drug men, a charity collector and a crazy ex-girlfriend.

8th Annual Caribbean Tales Gala Reception and Film Screening: NO BOIS MAN NO FRAID @ Harbourfront Centre, Toronto, ON - Wed Sept 4th!

The World Premiere of No Bois Man No Fraid,a feature documentary directed by Trinidad and Tobago filmmaker Christopher Laird, will be the Red Carpet Gala Screening at the 8th Annual CaribbeanTales Toronto Film Showcase. The event opens the festival’s main film showcase, which is co-produced with the Harbourfront Centre, on September 4 .

The Gala begins at 6:30 p.m.on when guests will enjoy a Caribbean reception, followed by the screening at
9 p.m. Co-hosted with the Consulate General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in Toronto, the event will be held along Toronto’s waterfront at the Harbourfront Centre Lakeside Terrace.

No Bois Man No Fraid (Trinidad and Tobago, 2013, 86 mins.) tells the story of two internationally certified martial artists, who are introduced to a very different style of combat sport. Kalinda, a combination of stick-fighting, dance, and folk music, is commonly practiced during the Carnival season, and draws on traditions handed down from slavery. The film follows Keegan and Benji as they rediscover their roots by entering into the potentially lethal arena of the Gayelle.

Christopher Laird has produced and directed over 300 documentaries, dramas and other video productions. Richard Fung, award-winning Canadian/Trinidadian filmmaker and curator, calls him “one of the most important filmmakers working in the Anglophone Caribbean.” Laird is the Founder and Managing Director of Banyan Ltd., that has, over the past 30 years produced arguably the world’s largest collection of Caribbean culture on video. In 2004, he co-founded Gayelle: The Channel, the region’s first all- Caribbean free-to-air television station.

Before the screening at Harbourfront Centre’s Studio Theatre, guests will enjoy Caribbean culinary delights prepared by award-winning executive chef, Selwyn Richard of The Art of Catering, and mix and mingle with filmmakers, celebrities and other dignitaries, while enjoying live music.

CARIBBEANTALES OPENS THIS WEEKEND!!

Stimulate the senses when you join the CaribbeanTales team this weekend for sampling of delicious rums as well as movies on such greats as Bob Marley, Black Stalin, Peter Minshall and Derek Walcott.

The 8th Annual CaribbeanTales Toronto Film Showcase begins at the CNE with the Gems of the Caribbean screening series, produced in partnership with Islands of the Caribbean, from August 17-30.
Watch MARLEY, HOME AGAIN, and new films from emerging filmmakers from Jamaica, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent and Saint Lucia.

On the evening of Saturday, August 17, starting at 5.30 pm, come and be part of “Tales of the Cocktails” where you can sample rums from Jamaica, Grenada and St. Lucia.

For those who have never seen the popular documentary Marley, or would love to watch it again, “Jamaica Jammin” begins at 6pm, first with short films from Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Aruba, Haiti and Dominican Republic, followed by this acclaimed movie by Academy-nominated Director Kevin McDonald on the life and work of Bob Marley.

On Sunday, August 18 we will “Celebrate Antigua & Barbuda and Grenada” with short films from these islands starting at 6pm, followed by Carnival Revelry, a collection of films about Carnival featuring an excerpt from new Antiguan film The Making of A Monarch about calypsonian Short Shirt, followed by Come With It Black Man featuring Black Stalin. The evening closes with Mas Man, a thrilling look at Peter Minshall’s contribution to Trini Carnival and what led him to choreographing three Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

The festival hosts an intensive five-day Incubator Program (September 3-9), that provides world-class training to filmmakers, and culminates in a “Pitch Breakfast” at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on September 8th.

The Harbourfront Centre leg of the festival takes place from September 4 - 14 when ten feature-length and 35 short films will be screened in Official Competition. The diverse selection includes features and documentaries from 25 countries.

Directors will be in attendance throughout the duration of the festival, giving the audience a chance to participate in feedback sessions.

There will be special community screenings of selected films over the course of the festival (more information to follow).

And every Sunday during the festival enjoy free online screening of Caribbean films at CaribbeanTales-TV. The new VOD Channel will have its Official Launch on Sept 12th.

The creativity of Caribbean filmmakers will be on display again this September when CaribbeanTales Toronto Film Showcase returns to “Hollywood North.” Now in its sixth year, the 2011 Film Showcase, and the recently introduced Market Incubator, will run from September 7-17, 2011 and engages families, youth, community groups and the celluloid industry in a programme that includes workshops, screenings, networking sessions, and other activities celebrating the burgeoning film and television sector in the Caribbean.
