7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

John Coltrane was an internationally known jazz musician for a very short period of time, first coming to prominence as part of Miles Davis' "first great quintet" in the fall of 1955. From the 1959 recording of his second solo album, Giant Steps, until his death in the summer of 1967, Coltrane's studio recordings and live performances turned the jazz world on its head. This lecture will explore recordings such as 1963's "Alabama," 1965's "A Love Supreme" and 1967's "Expression," approaching Coltrane's work as evidence of an artist deeply involved in a quest for both spiritual and musical transcendence. Join Rob Bowman, Associate Professor, York University, Department of Music and Grammy-Award-winner (music writing) for this wonderful evening.

Kuumba Film Series: Black Identity - Shorts (REMEMBER AFRICVILLE, COLOUR OF BEAUTY and BLACK SOUL) @ Studio Theatre, York Quay Centre, Toronto, ON - Sun Feb 9th!

Three short films will be featured within the hour:

Remember Africville (35 mins)

This short film depicts Africville, a small black settlement that lay within the city limits of Halifax. In the 1960s, the families there were uprooted and their homes demolished in the name of urban renewal and integration. More than 20 years later, the site of the community of Africville is a stark, under-utilized park. Former residents, their descendants and some of the decision-makers speak out and, with the help of archival photographs and films, tell the story of that painful relocation.

nfb.ca/film/remember_africville

Colour of Beauty (16 mins)

Renee Thompson is trying to make it as a top fashion model in New York. She's got the looks, the walk and the drive. But she’s a black model in a world where white women represent the standard of beauty. Agencies rarely hire black models. And when they do, they want them to look “like white girls dipped in chocolate.”

nfb.ca/film/colour_of_beauty

Black Soul (10 mins)

Martine Chartrand’s animated short dives into the heart of black culture with an exhilarating trip though history. Watch as a young boy traces his roots through the stories his grandmother shares with him about the events that shaped their cultural heritage.

The film follows a Garifuna language teacher, Ricardo, as he struggles to preserve his fading culture by building a language school back in his home village in Honduras. A business venture with his brother Miguel designed to raise money for the school’s construction becomes complicated by the expansion plans of a nearby tourist resort, prompting Ricardo to confront land rights issues in tandem with his educational mission. Family tensions heighten when Miguel waivers in the face of pressure from the resort, and Ricardo’s wife Becky objects to her daughter Helena’s new boyfriend Gabriel. Historical parallels to the contemporary land struggle are invoked as Ricardo’s son Elijah rehearses a stage play about Garifuna hero and Paramount Chief, Joseph Satuyé and his last stand against British colonialism on the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean over 200 years ago.
