Imogene, Dotlyn and Madge are 3 mature / middle aged women who have a few things in common; they are Christians, single/unmarried with no children. They realize however that being in the church is impeding them from getting a male companion, because let’s face it; there are no men in the church, and at their age, the chances of this becoming a reality is even more daunting; unless they are open to exploring other options such as on-line dating (suggested by Madge). Imogene is not so thrilled at this idea as in her eyes it is not Christian-like to embark on the wordily path; however she is promptly reminded by the other 2 that she should be more accepting of any option as she is illegal in Canada (has been for 15 years) so really her only chance of ever getting a landed status is by marriage.

Luck however was not on Imogene’s side; she was picked up by immigration and deported immediately to Jamaica without getting a chance to sort out some critical business. Now faced with the fact that she must entrust her 2 friends to handle her affairs in Canada, she learnt the hard way that “Friendship and Trust don’t always go hand in hand”. In addition, the brother she left in Jamaica to handle her affairs and who was seemingly swindling monies out of her over the years; has moved into her house; with the obvious expectation that she would not be returning to Jamaica to live due to her illegal status.

Imogene has really hit rock bottom BUT.. wait for it ..If God is for you WHO can be against you!!

DECEPTION is filled with lots of laughter, lots of emotions and will leave you definitely wanting for more!!

“Blood Ticka Dan Watah” Drama, Laughter, in short an Audience Pleaser!

The City of Brampton and adjoining districts are in for a real treat on Sunday October 22 when Marcia Brown Productions new stage play “Blood Ticka Dan Watah” makes at stop at Central Peel Secondary School. All the elements that audiences have come to appreciate and trust from Marcia Brown Productions stage plays will be up front and centre in “Blood Ticka Dan Watah”.

The play written by Marcia Brown and directed by Douglas Prout; follows a story sadly familiar to many an immigrant woman but is particularly laden with a Jamaican nuance.  Imagine being a young immigrant woman in Canada who has left twins behind in Jamaica to be raised by their grandmother, given a new lease on life, starting a new family with new husband and not knowing how to disclose her prior twins.  The secret has been kept for far too long and the emotional toll of this burden is evident as the story unfolds for each character. When the twins are revealed, they quickly become the new unwelcomed guests in a new country and new family and if not for the intervention of their Grandmother “Mada May” their fate would be dismal.  Needless to say we arrive at the purpose behind the play’s name after edge-of-seat suspense brought on by the impact of a family secret, youthful angst which adds more secrets and the realization that with all the challenges possibly hurled at one family the blood which bonds them is indeed stronger than the flood of other forces.

There are three (3) priority reasons to go see this play: First you will be fully entertained as the play is written, directed and delivered with comedic and dramatic flair. There is never a dull moment and you will want to pay attention to, and likely repeat the various quips, phrases and comedic spills from Brown herself who plays the grounded character of Mada May with a humour that leaves you the audience member with semi-permanent laugh lines. Second, you will be impressed with the level of talent previously hidden amidst our community. You must support! You must support!! You must support!!!

This play is highly recommended for the entire family, as it will help you to identify ways to address some concerns faced by our youth and to perhaps open up the lines of conversation for those sitting on the fence about revealing secrets.  You come away knowing that family should and can be a safe space when led by love.

On Sunday February 21, 2016, at 6PM, The Alliance of Jamaican Alumni Associations (Toronto) – AJAA, will present Marcia Brown Productions theatrical stage play “FRONT ROOM” as a fund raising venture!!

AJAA is a charitable umbrella organization comprised of forty (40) Toronto-based alumni associations affiliated with educational institutions in Jamaica. AJAA was organized in 1988, and since then it has been involved in administering the educational activities of alumni associations in Toronto.

Through the dedicated efforts of the AJAA and these alumni associations; organizing fund-raising events such as this, financial scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing High School and Post Secondary studies in Canada and Jamaica.

Front Room is a slice of Jamaican life that is nostalgic, spirited, tangy, real and hilariously funny. Set in the inner city of down-town Kingston, Front Room gives an authentic view of a tenement yard situation when the biggest room in the yard becomes vacant.

This front room carries a perception of prestige and is the envy to not only the tenants in the yard but the entire area. Miss Pinky (a tenant in the yard), a bible touting born again Christian firmly believes she is next in line to get the front room given her “hush-hush” relationship with the landlord Mr. Keys. It would also create a good impression on her niece Peaches who will be coming from the country to stay with her while she attends nursing school in Kingston.

Miss Pinky is therefore very infuriated when she is side stepped by Mr. Keys and the front room is rented to a total stranger, Miss Melva. These are all the ingredients needed for a roller-coaster ride filled with drama and laughter, all larger and more genuine than life itself.

It is the tug-an-war for the front room that develops the characters and scenes in Front Room. Of course there are conflicts in relationships among the people, but this does not prevent the community from uniting itself when a member of the yard is threatened. It is the Jamaica of today that is mirrored in ‘Front Room’, the real builders, the real people who stalwartly take life’s problems as they come, solve them the best way possible and move on in their particular way of improving their quality of life.

Marcia Brown Productions is in it 15th year of producing a theatrical stage play in the GTA for Father’s Day Weekend. This year the company will feature another play from Aston Cooke’s repertoire “FRONT ROOM”. Brown over the years has produced several plays written by Cooke, inclusive of “Country Duppy”, “Common-Law”, “Children-Childen” and “Single Entry” and all have been crowd pleasers, so it is a fair assumption that Front Room will live up to the anticipated expectations.
