Factory presents the world premiere of TWISTED, a spoken word and prose collaboration between playwrights Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman and Joseph Jomo Pierre. TWISTED is directed by Factory Theatre’s Associate Artistic Director, Nigel Shawn Williams, with music composed by Hagler, producer of Drake.

TWISTED is a modern-day reimagining of the Dickens classic, Oliver Twist, set in the heart of Toronto’s urban centre. In this retelling, Ollie, an orphaned black youth, and bottom girl Nancy are trying to survive the gritty streets of Toronto. Ollie has been in and out of foster homes and Nancy suffers from a loveless childhood, but they find love in each other, at least through their cell phones. Through their intimate and poetic text messages, they forge a powerful real-time connection – and plan a dangerous escape for a better life. Together.

Mixing spoken word poetry, hip-hop, and prose, TWISTED is a 21st Century love story committed to exposing modern social injustice. Like the work of Dickens from 200 years ago, TWISTED gives voice to the unheard, represents the fringes of society, and reveals the true cost of love.

Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada and an award-winning playwright. Her writing credits include The Summer of February (CBC radio play); The End of Pretending; Scratch (winner of the Herman Voaden Award and Dora Award nominee for Outstanding New Play); and a co-creator of Highway 63: The Fort Mac Show.

Joseph Jomo Pierre is a playwright, actor, and self-proclaimed ‘Child of Hip-Hop.’ Born in Trinidad and Tobago and raised in Scarborough his plays include Shakespeare’s Nigga, Born Ready, and Pusha-Man. Pierre served a consulting director for Allan King’s final documentary Empz 4 Life, which was inspired partly by his play, Born Ready.

TWISTED stars Susanna Fournier and Ngabo Nabea. Fournier is an actor and playwright who works in film, television and theatre. Acting credits include X-MEN: Days of Future Past, Rookie Blue, Murdoch Mysteries, Pride and Prejudice (Grand Theatre); True Love Lies (Factory); and The Diary of Anne Frank (Segal Centre).

Factory is proud to introduce Ngabo Nabea in his first professional performance in Canada. Born in Toronto, Nabea spent his childhood years living in Africa and Europe. Nabea recently returned to Toronto to finish his studies in theatre at Ryerson University where he has appeared in Jesus Hopped the A-Train, King Lear and Proof.

With 10 successful performances 'Mi Get Mi Landed' captivated and thrilled thousands of patrons in the Greater Toronto area including Toronto, Scarborough, Brampton, Mississauga, Barrie, Oshawa and Hamilton and Ottawa. In fact, according to Toronto’s Share Newspaper, “Patrons can’t seem to get enough of Devon Haughton’s Mi Get Mi Landed.” The play has received great attendance and tremendous adulation from patrons, journalists, investors, and moviemakers.

With a dynamic cast led by one of Jamaica’ best thespians Terri Salmon, Mi Get Mi Landed is a dramatic comedy written by award winning playwright Devon Haughton. This hilarious play delves into the consequences of getting into relationships with ulterior motives.

The play surrounds the life of Ruth (Judy Cox), a hardworking and mild-mannered woman who wanted only love and happiness when she foolishly falls in love with Enos, marries him, and then sponsors him to emigrate from Jamaica to Canada.

Enos arrives “landed” (having legal immigrant status) to live with Ruth and her colourful wig-wearing, cantankerous sister Tatti (played by Terri Salmon). Not too long after, Tatti moves out of the house and what happens subsequently is a comedic display of a world of lies and deceit as the truth is made evident.

Secrets of a Black Boy @ Daniels Spectrum Theatre, Toronto, ON - Sat Jul 27th! Two Shows!

Secrets of a Black Boy was created by Actor and Playwright, Darren Anthony in   his endeavors to provide a voice for the new generation of urban non-theatre goers who craved seeing themselves mirrored and their own stories characterized on stage.  The grit and truth of Secrets’ voice is one that has resonated with audiences  from Toronto to south of the border with the elements of hip-hop,
humour and revelation incorporated in this production – it’s a concert, party and play all in one!

The timing for this production could not have been better in light of the Trayvon Martin case and verdict. With the faces of Black males often attached to negative stories and headlines with the "who and what" often being discussed, but avoiding the WHY!  Secrets’ objective is to share the "why" behind the headlines, and these conversations.  The complexities of the lives of Black male youth in Toronto often go uncovered in mainstream media and entertainment productions, leaving many
voices silenced and unheard.

For the first time, Secrets of a Black Boy will be hosting a Q&A discussion to follow its matinee show titled, “Sharing Our Secrets”: A Community Forum that will look at how the themes of the play are connected to what is currently happening in our cities and neighbourhoods.  The conversation is geared to reaching the youth that need to hear this most by creating an environment for them to not only
express their anger and frustrations but to also address solutions.

This brutally honest new piece gives voice to five Black men from Toronto whose in-your-face stories are set against the backdrop of the displacement of families in Regent Park. Every stereotype Black men face will be critically examined and explored, subsequently, giving audiences a fresh, new and authentic experience!  You’ll never look at a Black man the same again!

Directed by Kimahli Powell, with writing contributions by Executive Producer and   Dramaturge Trey Anthony, Secrets of a Black Boy stars five of Toronto’s hottest young actors including Playwright, Darren Anthony, Edutainer and Shock Artist, Samson Brown, Actor and Songwriter Shomari Downer, Producer, Director, and Spoken Word Artist, Al St. Louis, along with our new and exciting cast member Troy Crossfield.  Joining this stellar cast on stage will be the legendary DJ O to provide the beats and atmosphere for the production.  After sold out performances in 2009 to a Toronto audiences, and 3 successful performances in Brooklyn, New York at ActNow’s ‘New Voices in Theatres’ series in 2012, the hit play is back to spill more secrets with a kickoff show in Toronto on July 27th followed by a closing show for North Carolina’s National Black Theatre Festival.  The National Black Theatre Festival is the largest platform for bringing Black theatre companies throughout America together to participate in presenting plays, readings, and workshops.
