Nia Centre for the Arts presents A Black Art Fair - an opportunity to meet talented local Black artists, and acquire amazing pieces for your art collection. Artworks for sale will be priced for all budgets.

As part of A Black Art Fair, Nia Centre will present a unique seminar designed to support potential buyers in better understanding both the impact and value of Buying  Black Art. This seminar will be hosted at the beginning of A Black Art Fair, from 1:30 - 2:30pm, and will be led by Nia Centre Executive Director Alica Hall, alongside visual artists Gordon Shadrach and more.

Please join Syrus Marcus Ware, the inaugural Artist In Residence for Daniels Spectrum as he toasts a year of art making and community collaboration through a celebration and community love fest with residents of Regent.

Join us for a communal meal, take in the pop up performances by local residents, and experience the drawings and banners made during Syrus’s residency at Daniels Spectrum. Part performative Activist Love Letter , part formal sit down dinner- this gathering will feature performances by local artists and activists and food by the Show Love Cafe, Regent Park Catering Collective, and Nish Dish.

“I used to live in Regent in the late 90s, and have fallen back into this landscape in such a deep and familiar way. By far, what stands out for me about Regent Park is the people. I have spent the past year taking portraits of residents and activists here, translating them into giant drawn portrait celebrating their lives and their organizing. Over the past year, I have found a new home in Daniels Spectrum: a space of healing, power, support, creativity and magical transformation.

When trying to imagine a closing summary that could showcase this amazing year, this amazing place, I instinctively felt that the most important thing that I could do was to share my love back to this powerful community. These people , who are gathered around this place, have made me feel whole, and I have witnessed first hand how they have shared and been with each other to ensure that everyone here makes it/survives and thrives.” - Syrus Marcus Ware

The Black Artist Market was born out of a frustration with the anti-black racism in art spaces in Toronto. It was born out of a being exhausted by the struggle of trying to survive as a Black artist in Toronto. The Black Artist Market was born out of a yearning to see Black Artist in Toronto come together. Finally, it was born out a need to honour the brilliance of the Black Artist.

#BAMTO is a series of Black Artist Markets taking place in Toronto. The Black Artist Market is dedicated to Black Art in Toronto. Artists markets in Toronto rarely, if ever, prioritize the voices and art of those who, despite being the most marginalized contribute the most to culture. It can also be an extremely lonely and isolating as a Black Artist to be in spaces that allow us to participate, but do not prioritize or understand the Black Artist experience.

This event is the first of it's kind! It will take a whole new spin on what artist markets can be. There will be a DJ spinning live at the event, the space is wheelchair accessible and a diverse set of vendors,! This market will be interactive and specifically curated. It will be so much more than some folding tables and chairs.

The black artists that are part of this event blow me away with their gift of imagining and creating the world in brilliant ways.

In the upcoming weeks there will be a feature on each of the brilliant artist. So stay tuned! on Come out to support local Black Artists in our community!

Boston Marathon, Canadian long distance runner Tom Longboat smashed the previous world record

by a whopping five minutes. An inspiration to Aboriginal and Canadian people, sculptor David M.

General has created a tribute to Longboat to his legacy as a Canadian sport icon.

REQUIEM OF WATER by Meaghan Ogilvie is an act of remembrance to the spirit of water that has

been forgotten. Ogilvie was inspired by the Anishinaabe culture and their women’s responsibility to

exhibit is to heighten public awareness and encourage thoughtful responsibility towards our precious

water resources and the role we play in caring for them.

WATER’S EDGE, Six internationally renowned fine art photographers, each originating from a Pan

Flotilla of 41 Sails
presented in partnership with PANAMANIA

WHAT:
In celebration of the culture and artistry of the 41 participating Pan Am countries, the Textile Museum of Canada has brought together 41 artists, one from each country, to create unique and captivating sails. These carefully selected designs will animate Lake Ontario with colourful demonstrations of rich cultural diversity, honouring the Pan Am Sailing events, with ten sail boats to watch out for per day (eleven on the first day).

WHO:
41 sail boats featuring the specially designed sails by 41 Pan American artists. A daily list of
Countries being represented available upon request. Best viewing spots will be at the western and
eastern points of the sail past, respectively at Harbourfront Centre and Sugar Beach.

WHEN:
July 14-17, 5:30pm – 7pm

WHERE:
5:30pm: Sailboats launch from Harbourfront Centre Sailing &Powerboating (HCSP) docks (Queens Quay and Rees Street) and sail east towards Sugar Beach at the Corus Building/Corus Quay
(Queens Quay and Jarvis Street).
6pm: Sailboats will hold off in fleet position for ten minutes at the foot of Queens Quay and Simcoe
near the Ontario Celebration Zone.
6:10pm: Boats continue sail east towards Sugar Beach and loop to complete the 2nd pass of the
building and return westward to dock

OPENING NIGHT–LOVE, DISHONOR, MARRY, DIE, CHERISH, PERISH is a tribute to David

Rakoff. The show includes a dramatized reading of Rakoff’s whimsical and deeply moving portrait of

life in the 20th century. Part novel, part epic poem, Rakoff’s final work explores human fallibility and

redemption through beautifully drawn characters, with illustrations by internationally renowned

cartoonist Seth, who will also be present.

PANAMANIA presented by CIBC, begins its 35-day run as the arts and culture festival enhancing the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games experience. Unprecedented in scale, PANAMANIA features more than 1,300 artists in 250 performances and exhibitions across Toronto starting today and running until August 15.
