Each step of the way it has evolved in character and become enriched with talent. “Exclusive Entertainment feels honored to bring ‘Joy in the Morning’ to Toronto, where it will feature some of our hometown’s most notable talent--such as Divine Brown” says George Fynn, CEO of Exclusive Entertainment.

OBEAH OPERA @ 918 Bathurst Centre, Toronto, ON - Wed Feb 22nd - Sun March 4th

b current Performing Arts in co-production with Theatre Archipelago proudly presents the full stage mounting of Obeah Opera. A total musical journey with a twist, the evocative production celebrates significant influence of black music combining blues, folk, jazz, gospel, spirituals, R&B, and traditional genres. Created (book, libretto, and music) by Nicole Brooks, this mesmerizing work will be presented as part of Black History Month at the 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture from February 22 –March 4, 2012.

Obeah Opera explores the Caribbean connection of a notorious time in North American history and tells the story of five woman accused of abominable spiritual acts in the peaceful Puritan Town where they live. The opera is loosely based on historical texts of the infamous witch-hunts and 17th century trials in Salem Massachusetts, journeying musically with some of the women first accused of the derided practice of obeah.

"This Caribbean-themed opera is a pioneering Canadian theatre piece, which gives an intimate look into some lost pages in history,” says Dub Theatre mistress and Founder of b current, ahdri zhina mandiela, who also directs Obeah Opera. “Producing the piece renews creative and cultural pride for both theatre companies, our artists, and much of our audience.”

The cast of Obeah Opera includes renaissance performance artist Nicole Brooks, Calypso Queen supreme Macomere Fifi, vocalist and recording artist Joni NehRita, newcomer Saphire Demitro, and Canadian soul rocktress Saidah Baba Talibah. The production is rounded out with an all female 10-member chorus.

Musical direction by contemporary composer and vocalist, Tova Kardonne; choreography by Anthony Prime Guerra; set and costume design by Julia Tribe; Lighting design by CJ Astronomo; and stage management by Sandi Becker.

From its early showcasing and recent workshop production in May 2011, Obeah Opera audiences have generated an exciting response. "Producing this piece solidifies our mandate to present works from the Diaspora inspired by a Caribbean understanding" says Rhoma Spencer, Theatre Archipelago's Founding Artistic Director and Artistic Producer for the opera. This is a production not to be missed.

MEMPHIS - A New Broadway Musical @ The Toronto Centre For the Arts, Toronto, ON - Wed Dec 7th - Sat Dec 24th!

Dancap Productions Inc. presents
Four-Time Tony® Award-Winner
MEMPHIS
A New Broadway Musical
The Birth of Rock n' Roll Radio at the Toronto Centre for the Arts
Opening Night: December 7, 2011

Still wowing them on Broadway, the 2010 Tony-Award Winner for Best Musical, MEMPHIS will blow the roof off the Toronto Centre for the Arts, beginning December 6, for a limited run until Christmas eve! The North American tour of MEMPHIS will make its one and only Canadian stop in Toronto, presented by Dancap Productions, one of the Tony Award-winning producers.

Turn Up That Dial . . . Inspired by actual events and the life of Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips, MEMPHIS tells the story of a young white radio DJ who wants to change the world, and a beautiful young black a club singer who is ready for her big break. From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, comes a hot new Broadway musical that bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, roof-raising music, and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love.

The Birth of Rock n Roll . . . It was the new sound of a young generation hungry for change. A change that defied the rigid structures and conservative standards of Tin Pan Alley, and synthesized a variety of musical genres into one eclectic sound: Rock 'n' Roll.

In the early 1950s, this new sound was considered to be "race music" as its origins were strongly influenced by the black musical roots of rhythm and blues, soul and gospel. In this era of segregation, even the radio was a venue of divide. Centre of the dial radio stations, which were easily accessible, were designated for traditional music and standards being produced by Broadway composers; while left of the dial, commonly distorted, radio stations were allotted for black music. This was until a disc jockey by the name of Alan Freed began to play the new "Rock 'n' Roll" sound - a term coined by Freed - as featured music on his middle of the dial radio station.

MEMPHIS features a Tony®-winning book by Joe DiPietro and a Tony®-winning original score with music by Bon Jovi's founding member David Bryan. MEMPHIS is directed by Tony® nominee Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Canadian Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys).

Some of the awards racked up by MEMPHIS so far include: 2010 Tony Award® for Best Musical; 2010 Tony Award® Best Book of a Musical - Book by Joe DiPietro; 2010 Tony Award® Best Original Score Written for the Theatre - Music by David Bryan, Lyrics by David Bryan and Joe DiPietro; 2010 Tony Award® Best Orchestrations - David Bryan and Darryl Waters; 2010 Drama Desk Award Outstanding Musical; 2010 Drama Desk Award Outstanding Orchestrations - David Bryan and Darryl Waters; and 2010 Drama Desk Award Outstanding Music - David Bryan.

The New York Post called MEMPHIS, "an exuberant musical with classic values: catchy songs, and heaping spoonfuls of inspirational moments." The Associated Press also praised the show; "MEMPHIS is the very essence of what a Broadway musical should be." The New York Daily News said MEMPHIS "wins you over with its sheer enthusiasm and exuberant performances." John Simon of the Bloomberg News praised the show; "I guarantee you a rambunctious good time, highlighted by rousing music and singing, spectacular dancing, and a witty, moving story." David Richardson of WOR Radio calls MEMPHIS "The biggest hit on Broadway," while Charles Isherwood of the New York Times says, "David Bryan evokes the powerhouse funk of James Brown, the hot guitar riffs of Chuck Berry, the smooth harmonies of the Temptations, and the silken, bouncy pop of the great girl groups of the period." The New York Post raves "Of such thrills, Broadway is made," Newsday calls the show "A smash! An extraordinary show," the Daily News promises that MEMPHIS will "Blast you out the door humming and happy" and NY1's Roma Torre cheers, "MEMPHIS ROCKS!"

'Da Kink in My Hair' returns to the T.O. this week at the Enwave Theatre at Harbourfront Centre. Trey Anthony Studios proudly presents the return of ‘da Kink' as she celebrates its 10 year anniversary and the launch of a North American Tour with 14 performances in its birthplace.

Five years ago, Da Kink in my Hair took Toronto by storm breaking box office records, wowing audiences and critics, and leaving audiences with an emotional impact like no other! Set in a Caribbean hair salon in Toronto, this amazing musical takes you on an intimate journey through the lives of nine dynamic women as they share their incredible, uncensored, unforgettable stories. Stories that will move, inspire, and delight you!

It will make you reflect on many hard hitting subjects as the characters tackle life’s issues with truth and comedy.

IF YOU THINK YOU’VE SEEN ‘da KINK’ BEFORE… THINK AGAIN!!

You won’t be disappointed with the exciting NEW changes made to this award-winning production which features a new North American cast, new monologue, new choreography, and new music from GRAMMY award-winner Carol Maillard (Sweet Honey in the Rock).

See 'da Kink again for the first time!
